Positive Results from Collaborating with Folks in Other Generations

I’ve found many positive results from collaborating with folks in other generations. Yet, sometimes people in my Baby Boomer generation make disparaging comments about Millennials or Generation Z. Not surprisingly, the members of those generations can dish it right back. Recently they’ve started to use the phrase “OK Boomer” as their way of criticizing boomers who seem out of touch or dismissive. My intent is not to discredit the many ways in which people are discriminated against because of their age. Instead, I want to offer my perspective on intergenerational collaboration. As an entrepreneur for the past seven years, my [...]

How to Leverage Your Connections When Searching on LinkedIn

You need to know how to leverage your connections when searching on LinkedIn. Whether you’re a business owner or a job seeker, you want to make the most of any connections you have. Your search results are a direct outgrowth of your connections. Yet many people don’t have a clue how to get started searching effectively. LinkedIn provides several kinds of search filters, even for those with a free account. Applying them helps narrow your search so you find just the people you need most. Keep in mind that LinkedIn limits the number of searches a person with a free [...]

Ways to Save Time on Social Media

Have you been looking for ways to save time on social media? Sometimes people find themselves getting far too absorbed in social media when they don’t mean to. They may feel guilty for neglecting the people in their lives. Or they aren’t giving enough attention to important home and professional responsibilities because of time spent on social media. Other people aren’t that keen on social media and try to avoid it as much as possible. Yet, as business owners or job seekers, they see the value of having a strong presence on certain sites. Use Social Media to Promote Your Group and Speakers

How do you use social media to promote your group and speakers? When we are part of an organization, we often focus mostly on promoting our group’s meetings and speakers before the event. However, there’s a lot of value in posting on social media after the event takes place. Recently I presented an overview of LinkedIn to members of the Rising Tide Business Network. The co-founders of this terrific business networking group did an excellent job of using social media to promote all phases of the event. They focused primarily on Facebook to promote my presentation and celebrate it afterwards. [...]

Ways to Slow Down on Social Media

It’s been good for me to find ways to slow down on social media, especially over the holidays. Over the last few weeks, I’ve read a few great books and spent more time with my family. Social media, which is often so prominent in my life, was relegated to a secondary status. Have you found ways to step away from social media, or at least reduce the amount of time you spend on it? If you haven’t, I highly recommend finding ways to take breaks from it now and then. And you don’t need a major holiday to do it. [...]

Frequency of Facebook Posting

Sometimes it’s difficult to determine the frequency of Facebook posting. There are some general guidelines for how frequently to post on a business page. Yet, I’ve not seen much guidance on how often to post on one’s personal page. In many ways, the best way to determine frequency of Facebook posting is to use common sense. Just like you wouldn’t want to dominate conversation at a social or business gathering, don’t post too often on Facebook. Do your best to add posts that create interest or add value in some way to those who read them.   Posting on Your [...]

Thankful for the Alternative Business Networking Group (ABNG)

As we approach Thanksgiving, I’m feeling very thankful for the Alternative Business Networking Group (ABNG). This remarkable organization recently celebrated its 9th anniversary.   What is ABNG? Quoting from part of the About section of the ABNG Meetup group: “At the Alternate Business Networking Group (ABNG) we want to attract members that are not only interested in getting referrals, but also want to give of themselves to encourage and help strengthen the businesses of the other group members. And, of course, we want to pass along quality referrals we may have. The key to a truly effective business network is [...]

Many Ways to be Gracious on LinkedIn

There are many ways to be gracious on LinkedIn, and people will truly appreciate you for doing so. These can range from the note you send to someone you hope to connect with to the comments you share. By way of background, unlike some, I often connect with people I haven’t met in real life. So, these tips come from that context.   Getting Connected By simply including a short note with your invitation to connect, you are being gracious. The recipient, especially if they are over 50, will be more receptive to connecting with you if you send a [...]

Value of Getting and Giving Recommendations on LinkedIn

Have you thought about the value of getting and giving recommendations on LinkedIn? Potential employers, clients and referral partners notice both those you receive and those you give. Yet, many people remain reluctant to ask for public recognition of their work. And some also hesitate to write a recommendation for someone else. Perhaps they don’t know how to ask for a recommendation. Or maybe they’re not sure what to say in one. Recommendations are vital ways to make your profile stand out. It’s one thing to say you’re great at something. It means a lot more when someone else attests [...]
