Your Next Chapter Deserves to Be Visible: How Your Online Presence Can Open New Doors

Your next chapter deserves to be visible: How your online presence can open new doors. What comes next after a long and fulfilling career? For some people, it's retirement. For others, it's consulting, volunteering, mentoring, serving on a nonprofit board, or pursuing interests they've never had time to explore. Whatever direction you choose, your online presence can play an important role in helping you discover new opportunities and connect with people who share your interests. On October 27, I had the pleasure of presenting "Practical Tools for the Next Phase: Your Online Presence" to the Fall 2026 cohort of [...]

Sales, Toastmasters and a Full-Circle Connection

I started my 17-year career in sales in October 1996 as a Membership Representative for what was then known as the West Chamber. It was one of the most rewarding positions I had during that career, in part because I had the opportunity to learn so much about the people and businesses in the western suburbs of Denver, the area served by the chamber. Taking on this role challenged me in many ways. I had to take the initiative to call and email people I had never met, enhance my listening skills when meeting with prospective members, become comfortable talking [...]

Outdoor Networking: Fresh Air, New Connections, and a Beach Ball

Have you ever thrown a beach ball during a networking event? I hadn't—until this week, when I attended the SHE Leads Group Outdoor Networking event at a beautiful lakeside park in the Denver metro area. Instead of gathering in a conference room or coffee shop, about 25 women business owners met beneath shady trees and a park shelter overlooking a small lake. The beach, calm water, and mountain views created a relaxed atmosphere that encouraged conversation from the moment we arrived. There was plenty of laughter, easy conversation, and a feeling that we could slow down long enough to truly [...]

Ways to Fine-Tune Your LinkedIn Profile

There are many simple ways to fine-tune your LinkedIn profile. During one-to-one business networking visits, I often ask permission to share two or three ideas for improving that person's profile. Most business owners, professionals, and job seekers appreciate an extra set of eyes on their LinkedIn presence. Here are a few examples of profile issues I've noticed recently and the simple fixes that can make a profile look more polished and professional.   Is Your Profile Photo Blocking Something In Your Banner? Just today, I pointed out to a new networking contact that his profile photo covered part of the [...]

How to Use ChatGPT for LinkedIn Without Losing Your Voice

Does your LinkedIn profile truly represent you and the value you bring? Do you sometimes sit down to write a post and think, “I know I should share something, but what do I say?” Or when engaging with others’ content, do you find yourself leaving comments that feel a bit generic—rather than something that really sounds like you? You’re not alone. Many professionals want to be more active on LinkedIn but feel unsure about how to express themselves clearly and consistently. The good news is that tools like ChatGPT can make this process easier when used thoughtfully. Ever since I [...]

Celebrating the 13th Anniversary of My Business

This month, I’m celebrating the 13th anniversary of my business, Boomers’ Social Media Tutor.  After working in sales for 17 years, I went full-time with my business in 2013, when I was 64 years old. The idea for my business actually began in March 2010, when Brett Sanborn, my manager when I held an inside sales position, asked if I had ever considered helping others in the baby boomer generation to understand social media. Earlier that year, our company had rolled out Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. While my manager encouraged everyone on my team to chat up the company’s [...]

Every Business Website Needs a Periodic Refresh — and the Right Partner to Help

I believe that every business website needs a periodic refresh and the right partner to help. If you visit my website these days, you may notice it looks a little different. Why Website Refreshes Matter One lesson this process reinforced is something I often tell my LinkedIn clients: your online presence is never “done.” Whether it’s your LinkedIn profile or your website, both are living tools that should reflect where your business is today — not where it was three or five years ago. Refreshing your website doesn’t mean starting over. Often, it means clarifying your message, simplifying navigation, updating [...]

Prepare and Adapt. Don’t Obsess.

Later this month, I’ll be having knee replacement surgery on the part of my right knee that is arthritic. It’s called a partial knee replacement. How wonderful it will be to walk my dogs or take a hike and not be in pain the entire time. As I anticipate this surgical experience and the recovery afterwards, I am applying a mindset that has served me well through many personal and professional changes in my life. This mindset can be summed up as: Prepare. Adapt. Don’t obsess. It’s a simple idea—but not always an easy one to practice.   Preparation [...]

Refusing to Be Invisible at 77: Standing Out on LinkedIn at Any Age

Many older women report feeling less visible as they age, particularly in professional contexts. This isn’t imagined—it’s a well-documented combination of ageism and sexism. That’s exactly why choosing visibility—on our own terms—matters. I’m turning 77 in December 2025, and my experience tells a different story from that of many other older women. As a LinkedIn trainer since 2013, I use LinkedIn intentionally to stay visible, relevant, and engaged in my field—not to prove anything, but to continue contributing in meaningful ways. While research shows that older women can sometimes feel overlooked in public and professional spaces, digital platforms can give [...]

Engaging With LinkedIn Connections in 2025

A client recently asked me a familiar question: How do I get more business out of my LinkedIn connections? He had been steadily growing his network—over 500 connections and counting—but hadn’t yet seen results in the form of referrals, conversations, or clients. After reviewing his profile and activity, one thing became very clear: he was connected, but not engaged. Engagement is the heartbeat of LinkedIn. It’s how you stay visible, start conversations, and build meaningful relationships that lead to opportunities. With that in mind, here are some practical ways to engage with your LinkedIn connections. One of the best [...]
