Selective use of notifications on LinkedIn can greatly benefit you.

Perhaps you have never thought to review your notifications. By never adjusting them, you are getting too much information in the notifications section of LinkedIn. Plus, you are getting all kinds of emails in your inbox that likely are not relevant to you.

The end result is that you may be ignoring your notifications – both on LinkedIn and via email. Some of these may be of value to you, so take the time to winnow down the types of notifications you get.

Value of Checking Your Notifications

If you check notifications on a regular basis, even once a week, you can get some helpful information. This LinkedIn feature is one of my favorites, as it helps me to track on the activities of my connections.

For example, LinkedIn will tell you when your connections are celebrating a work anniversary or gotten a new job. I’ve landed several new clients by commenting on people’s work anniversaries or new jobs.

Here’s another tip: adjust your notifications so that you get an email when someone messages you via LinkedIn. I have a client who didn’t have this notification adjusted this way. He lost a deal because the opportunity came to him through a LinkedIn message. But he didn’t know via his email the message was there.

How to Adjust Your Notifications Settings.

  • Your notifications settings are found in the Communications section of Settings and Privacy. Click on the small arrow next to Me just below the little photo of you and scroll down to Settings and Privacy.
    • Click on Communications and then Notifications by Channel
    • There are settings for notifications on LinkedIn and settings for notifications via email.
    • The types of notifications include conversations, jobs, network, news and profile. Specific notifications within each section may vary by user.
    • Click on the arrow to the end of each of the types of notifications and make your adjustments.
  • For notifications via your LinkedIn mobile app, go to this link to learn how to adjust them: https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/50992

Actions You Can Take Based on Your Notifications

  • Write a personal note of congratulations to connections with a work anniversary or a new job.
  • Check who has followed you and see if you want to follow them back or send them an invite to connect.
  • Find out who’s viewed your profile lately. To be able to see all the people who’ve visited your profile in the last 90 days, you will need a paid account.
  • Note who has liked or commented on a post you created or a comment you made. Be sure to respond to the comments.
  • Send a thank you note through LinkedIn messaging or via an email to people who endorse you for a skill.
