Ways to Slow Down on Social Media

It’s been good for me to find ways to slow down on social media, especially over the holidays. Over the last few weeks, I’ve read a few great books and spent more time with my family. Social media, which is often so prominent in my life, was relegated to a secondary status. Have you found ways to step away from social media, or at least reduce the amount of time you spend on it? If you haven’t, I highly recommend finding ways to take breaks from it now and then. And you don’t need a major holiday to do it. [...]

How to Stand Out on LinkedIn as a Job Seeker

To land the job you want, it helps to know how to stand out on LinkedIn as a job seeker. By showcasing yourself and your skills in your profile, recruiters and hiring authorities are more likely to find you. The most critical parts of the profile for a job seeker are the headline, the summary, and the work experience section.   Stand Out by Creating an Impactful Headline Your headline, along with your photo and your name, are the first things people see when they find you. Therefore, you want to make an excellent first impression in your headline. Here [...]

Frequency of Facebook Posting

Sometimes it’s difficult to determine the frequency of Facebook posting. There are some general guidelines for how frequently to post on a business page. Yet, I’ve not seen much guidance on how often to post on one’s personal page. In many ways, the best way to determine frequency of Facebook posting is to use common sense. Just like you wouldn’t want to dominate conversation at a social or business gathering, don’t post too often on Facebook. Do your best to add posts that create interest or add value in some way to those who read them.   Posting on Your [...]

Thankful for the Alternative Business Networking Group (ABNG)

As we approach Thanksgiving, I’m feeling very thankful for the Alternative Business Networking Group (ABNG). This remarkable organization recently celebrated its 9th anniversary.   What is ABNG? Quoting from part of the About section of the ABNG Meetup group: “At the Alternate Business Networking Group (ABNG) we want to attract members that are not only interested in getting referrals, but also want to give of themselves to encourage and help strengthen the businesses of the other group members. And, of course, we want to pass along quality referrals we may have. The key to a truly effective business network is [...]

Many Ways to be Gracious on LinkedIn

There are many ways to be gracious on LinkedIn, and people will truly appreciate you for doing so. These can range from the note you send to someone you hope to connect with to the comments you share. By way of background, unlike some, I often connect with people I haven’t met in real life. So, these tips come from that context.   Getting Connected By simply including a short note with your invitation to connect, you are being gracious. The recipient, especially if they are over 50, will be more receptive to connecting with you if you send a [...]

Value of Getting and Giving Recommendations on LinkedIn

Have you thought about the value of getting and giving recommendations on LinkedIn? Potential employers, clients and referral partners notice both those you receive and those you give. Yet, many people remain reluctant to ask for public recognition of their work. And some also hesitate to write a recommendation for someone else. Perhaps they don’t know how to ask for a recommendation. Or maybe they’re not sure what to say in one. Recommendations are vital ways to make your profile stand out. It’s one thing to say you’re great at something. It means a lot more when someone else attests [...]

Removing Connections and Blocking People on LinkedIn

People often ask me about removing connections and blocking people on LinkedIn. There are many reasons for people to bring up these matters. For example, sometimes you might grow apart from people and no longer have an interest in them. So, you decide to remove them as a connection. Or the person may be a competitor of yours. Many people choose not to connect with others who are direct competitors of theirs. Blocking can be an option if a connection or a someone inviting you to connect comes across as too pushy and annoying.     Removing a LinkedIn Connection [...]

Selecting the Right Photos to Use on Facebook

Do you need help with selecting the right photos to use on Facebook? Photos and other images typically enhance the reach of a post. Even with the increasing use of videos, photos still provide a big impact. Yet, sometimes it’s hard to know which ones and how many to post. Certainly, the selection of photos is largely a matter of personal style and preference. But there are some general guidelines I have come up with as both social media professional and user.
