At this point you may be wondering – what is native video on LinkedIn? Or even – asking yourself, since when does LinkedIn have this type of video option? After hearing Viveka von Rosen speak on the importance of using native video on LinkedIn, I realized I need to start using this feature more.

Who is Viveka von Rosen and What is Native Video?

Simply, native video is video that is created specifically for LinkedIn rather than uploaded from another site.

In his December 22, 2017, article in the blog Social Media Examiner, Michael Stelzner quotes Viveka saying, “LinkedIn native video is a video you record on your phone or computer and then upload to LinkedIn. To share a video with this feature, click the video camera icon, upload your video, and then share it as an update… The LinkedIn algorithm gives native videos more weight, so they show up more often in the feed.”

As I mentioned in my previous post (about Twitter), I learned so much there that my next few posts will share some of my new knowledge.

Why Use Native Video on LinkedIn

  • Native video provides anywhere from 10 to 100 times more visibility for a post than a video uploaded from a YouTube channel.
  • When you publish your video directly through LinkedIn, you keep people on LinkedIn rather than sending them elsewhere.
  • Video is the best way to build your brand and your credibility. It gives people a sense of who you are.
  • More people tend to engage with a post that has video associated with it.

Tips for Using Native Video

  • Keep the video between 30 and 90 seconds – this is the sweet spot for keeping people’s attention. FYI, the minimum time for a video is three seconds and the maximum is 10 minutes.
  • Show tips and tricks or teach a skill.
  • Interview people and have them provide testimonials.
  • Record while you are in front of a live audience – it increases your credibility.
  • Add live or sponsored video to a company page.
  • Keep in mind that video posts can have up to 1,200 characters in their descriptions. Mention relevant people with the @ sign and use hashtags, especially hashtags you have created yourself.
  • Make a comment right after you create the video post and reference any links mentioned in the video there for easy access.
  • Be sure to keep on eye on your notifications after you post. Check out the comments and reply. Also, confirm the engagement on your post with the statistics LinkedIn provides.
  • Share outside of LinkedIn. Click on the three dots at the top right of the post to copy the link and share it to Facebook.
