Do you use Twitter to increase your influence?

I must confess that I’m not much of a Twitter user, though that’s how I’ve been in the past. After hearing Laura Pence Atencio speak on using Twitter to increase influence, I’m reconsidering.

Laura is a radio host, author, digital marketing consultant, social media speaker, and online marketing strategist. In addition, she’s been on Twitter since 2010 and has nearly 120,000 followers. Find out more at https://socialsavvygeek.com/

Laura was one of many superb speakers at Social Media Day Denver 2018, and you can learn https://socialmediadaydenver.com/

Since I learned so much there, my next few posts will share some of my new knowledge. My first post will be this distillation of Laura’s remarks.

Types of Influencers on Twitter

  • Celebrities – typically have a large following but low engagement with their followers
  • Industry leaders – following may be high, and engagement is also typically high
  • Untapped influencers – often have a small following, yet have the highest level of engagement

Requirements for Becoming an Influencer on Twitter

  • Knowledgeable in your field and have some longevity in your business
  • Respected in your industry
  • Service-oriented and willing to share your expertise
  • Passionate and mission-driven about the services and/or products you provide

Tips for Using Twitter to Increase Your Influence

  • Know why you’re doing it
  • Complete your bio
  • Post content that speaks to your ideal audience
  • Participate, which means retweeting (sharing) the tweets of others
  • Follow the 70/30/10 rule. Make 70% of your tweets shared content from others, 20% your own informational content and 10% promotional content
  • Create relationships by engaging with tweets posted by others
  • Note who follows your industry peers and follow them
  • Avoid coming across as a snob or know-it-all
  • Keep focused with your time on Twitter – 10 minutes a day is plenty

Other Tips from Laura on Becoming More of an Influencer

  • Ask to be a guest blogger on another influencer’s blog.
  • Request to be interviewed on an influencer’s podcast.
  • Serve as an affiliate or ambassador for a well-known company or brand
  • Speak at and/or sponsor events where influencers are likely to attend
