I love to share tips for effective use of LinkedIn any time I can!

It was such an honor to have Deb Krier, host of the Business Power Hour podcast, interview me recently on this very topic. Deb is social media trainer, LinkedIn strategist, keynote speaker, and marketing advisor.

In the hour we spent together, we covered a wide range of tips for being as effective as possible on LinkedIn. It was a wonderful experience, and if you get a chance to be interviewed for a podcast, I hope you say yes!

See below for some of the key points we discussed. In addition, I really encourage you to listen to the entire podcast.

Highlights from the Podcast

Step back and ask yourself “Why am I on LinkedIn? What are my goals for using this site?” How you answer these questions will help determine how you can make the best use of LinkedIn.

  • Keep your profile current. Focus especially on your profile photo, headline, and the information in the section called “See contact info.” Be sure the info in this section is current.
  • When possible, use search terms in your headline instead of just your title and your company name.
  • Use the summary to give a bit of background about yourself in terms of your career. Write it as if you are talking with someone about yourself.
  • Realize that many people won’t read past your summary, so include the most important information here. Also, include your contact information, as well as a call to action. Keep in mind that only your connections see the info in your “See contact info” section. Anyone searching you on the internet can read your summary.
  • Another place to include search terms is in the position titles in the experience section. Include volunteer leadership roles along with paid positions. Doing this gives you a chance to show more diversity of skills, generosity of spirit, and capabilities as a leader. Plus, it’s a terrific way to draw attention to the organizations you care enough to volunteer for.
  • You can override the default listing in the skills and endorsement section by clicking on the pencil icon. Then click on the blue push pin icon next to one or more of the skills that are there. Click on the white push pin on any skills that you want to add to this top section. There is a limit of three skills for this top section.
  • When asking for recommendations, be specific. Jog the person’s memory by telling them what particular contributions you want to be recommended for.
