Do you brand yourself on your personal Facebook page?

Whether you have a Facebook business page or not, branding yourself your personal page makes a lot of sense.

Generally, I recommend that business owners create a business page. Having such a page increases your company’s search engine optimization (SEO). Also, you have access to many features that are not available on a personal page.

In order to make the most of your personal page, conduct a quick audit. Determine if you have populated all the sections described below. Plus make sure that you have selected “public” as the audience for each item. That way, anyone finding you on Facebook will have access to the information.

Getting the Most from the About Section

  • If you have a business page, add it in the Workplace section of Work & Education. Include a short description of your services/products, using searchable key words as often as possible.
  • List as many Professional Skills as are relevant. Look over the Skills and Endorsements section of your LinkedIn profile to get ideas for what to include.
  • Contact and Basic Information is a spot where you can include a link to your company’s website. You can also include links to any of your social media sites. Include Meetup groups you run and volunteer organizations where you have a leadership role. This information will display just below your featured photos.
  • Details About You has room for a short narrative about how you got involved with your business and what it does. This is a good place to mention your professional credentials and certifications. There doesn’t appear to be a character limit for this section. So consider adapting the About Us part of business website or the Summary section of your LinkedIn profile so you are not starting from scratch.

More Places in Your Personal Page to Brand Yourself

  • Choose a cover photo that relates to your business.
  • Use keywords in the Intro section. (There is a 90-character limit.)
  • Find some of your favorite photos of you working (or have someone take some) Add them to the featured photos section.
  • Add yourself as a Team member in the About section of your business page. Doing so adds a line on your personal page that says “Manages – the name of your business page.”

How About You?

What did your audit reveal? Were there sections you had not been using? Were there places where you could elaborate or freshen up the language? Are all those sections working for you now?
