Using Social Media to Pay It Forward

Recently I celebrated the third anniversary of my company Boomers’ Social Media Tutor. What began as simply a glimmer – a vision in my head – has blossomed into a full-fledged social media tutoring and training business. Everyone who starts a business does so as a result of some type of inspiration or vision.   How Boomers' Social Media Tutor Came to Be: I was motivated by a strong desire to help others, especially those in my age group, known as the Baby Boomer generation, (born between 1946 and 1964), to use social media to pay it forward. By which [...]

The Power of LinkedIn

Are you active on LinkedIn? If you aren’t using this essential social media tool, you can find it at www.linkedin.com LinkedIn has a more professional orientation than sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Perceived by many as simply an electronic “rolodex” of business contact information, LinkedIn actually has a broad array of valuable features. One of my favorite LinkedIn features is the ability to join groups. There are groups whose purpose is to follow trends and share information on just about every industry you can imagine. There are groups for professional and volunteer organizations, hobbies, and for a multitude of [...]

Pinterest for Business

Pinterest, a relative newcomer to the social media world, is often overlooked by those thinking about publicizing a business.  Overview of How Pinterest Works One of the appeals of Pinterest is its functionality. As a Pinterest user, you have the option to follow all or just a select few of another user’s boards. For those unfamiliar with the site, it’s based on the concept of the bulletin board – you post or “pin” items of interest to your boards. You can create as many boards as you have topics you want to post about.   When you “follow” a board, [...]

Connecting Your Individual Strengths with Your Social Media Experience

Have you thought about how using social media can help you to enhance the strengths you already have? Neither had I, until I started reading StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath. According to him, there are 34 strengths, sometimes called themes, each of which he describes in detail. When you purchase the book, you are assigned a code that gives you access to an online assessment. Once you complete the assessment, you can access your “Strengths Insight and Action-Planning Guide." This guide elaborates on your top five strengths and gives you ideas for how you can further develop them.   Joyce’s Top Five Strengths* [...]

Social Media Learning Opportunities

Where do you turn when you want to learn more about social media? Sometimes I get overwhelmed with deciding which of the countless learning opportunities to take advantage of. Being an extrovert, I prefer to be with other people for most of my social media learning experiences. However, I also find books, blog posts, newsletters and tutorials on social media sites to be incredibly helpful.   Social Marketing for Business Monthly Meetup Group One of my favorite ways to learn about social meeting is at the monthly gathering of the Social Marketing for Business Meetup, which meets at the South Metro [...]

Facebook Groups – Benefits and Considerations

Have you ever created a group on Facebook? I have been in a number of groups, but until today I had not created one. Now that I have, I thought I would share with you some benefits of belonging to a Facebook group, plus some considerations to keep in mind when starting and operating one. Facebook defines a Facebook group as “a close circle of people that share and keep in touch on Facebook.” Unlike the business pages on Facebook, which must be created by an official representative of the entity that owns the page, anyone can create a group. [...]

7 Random Facebook Factoids

In preparing to teach the Facebook for Beginners class at this week at Colorado Free University, a local community learning center, I really dug deeply into Facebook. Much of the information was review. Yet there were a few interesting items that I gleaned from my research and from other helpful sources of Facebook info.   Facebook Factoids You can join up to 300 Facebook groups. It is hard to imagine anyone joining that many groups, but I suppose there could be people with loads of interests and loads of time on their hands. How many groups are you in? How [...]

Natural Disasters and Social Media

Since I am not much of a TV watcher, I didn’t even think to turn on my TV to stay up to date on the flooding in my state of Colorado this week. Instead, I just popped into my Facebook news feed to watch for posts made by individuals and of posts shared from news outlets. Whether you use Facebook, Twitter and/or other social media sites to stay on top of breaking news in your community, state, nation or world, you can know 24/7 what is going on. There are many positives to using social media in times of natural [...]

Social Media Connection Opened a Door for Me

Has a social media connection opened up unexpected doors for you? Probably each person using social media has had this kind of thing happen at least once, if not many times. Here’s the story of how my latest door opened for me. Julie Genovesi Finds Me on LinkedIn Nearly 3 months ago New York Life Insurance Agent Julie Genovesi found me on the business oriented social media site LinkedIn and asked me to connect with her. After reviewing her profile, I accepted her invite. Although I am a pretty open networker, I do like to know why people want to connect [...]

Meeting Social Media Connections in Person

Last week when I was in Cincinnati for a Toastmasters convention, I got into a conversation with another Toastmaster about a social media training session that was held at the convention. He told me that he wasn’t at the session, but that he heard it was led by a woman named Crystal and the woman had blond hair. Disappointed that I had missed this session, I got to thinking that perhaps this session was led by my LinkedIn friend Crystal Thies, as she fit the description of the presenter. So, I messaged through LinkedIn asking her if she had been the one [...]
