Be a Go-Giver on Social Media

Are you a Go-Giver? So many of us, especially in the business world, have been rewarded for being go-getters, yet, the truly generous people, the Go-Givers, are often the most successful. This point is driven home very eloquently and practically in the classic book The Go-Giver: A Little Story about a Powerful Business Idea, by Bob Burg and John D. Mann and first published in 2007. What makes this book so appealing is its simplicity. Written in the format of a fable, with tales of business people illuminating each of the five main principles or “laws”: The law of value [...]

Free Ways for Nonprofits to Use Facebook

More and more nonprofits are using social media – from Facebook to Twitter to YouTube and more. With Facebook so popular among adults now, including those over 50, many of your greatest fans and donors are on Facebook. . While a Facebook business page offers a lot of potential exposure, it also has some downsides, one of which is that less than 10% (some say that number is as low as 3-5%) of those who like a business page will actually see the posts made on that page. So, what’s a nonprofit with a possibly limited marketing budget to do? [...]

LinkedIn is Much More Than an Electronic Rolodex

Too many people think of LinkedIn as simply a site where they craft an attractive profile of themselves and then wait for people to find them and contact them. LinkedIn is not just an electronic rolodex – it’s a powerful site for business professionals.   Beyond the Profile – Five Ways of Using LinkedIn Use the Advanced People Search feature. Click on the word “Advanced”, located to the right of the search box. Enter a key word, a location (if appropriate), the name of your current and most recent past employer, the industry you work in, and whatever else seems [...]

Successful Self-Employment Tips at an Un-Job Fair

One of my favorite events of the year is the Un-Job Fair, sponsored by the Colorado Free University and held at their facility in east Denver on a Saturday in late May. Entrepreneurs come from all over the greater Denver metro area to discover ways to enhance their self-employment success. Space doesn’t permit me to elaborate on what I learned from each presenter this year, so I have highlighted some of the tips from three: Tamara Kleinberg, Brad Friedman, and Deborah Flomberg.   Tamara Kleinberg: Founder of The Shuuk, a Testing Ground for Cool New Ideas Give yourself permission to [...]

An “Ask the LinkedIn Trainer” Session

Last weekend I was down in Colorado Springs speaking to about 20 fellow Toastmasters (members of an international communication and leadership organization) about using LinkedIn. Typically when I train on this subject I provide information on both how to use the platform to its best advantage as well as how to make a personal profile really shine. For this group, I decided to poll the audience before I started my presentation, asking them to tell me what stumps them when it comes to LinkedIn. Then I wove my answers into the “standardized” part of my training presentation. Many of their [...]

Community is a Major Part of What Makes Us Human

Although my blog posts typically focus on some aspect of social media, a recent “real-world” experience that allowed me to sense a true spirit of community has inspired me to devote this week’s blog to the importance of community. Last week I had the privilege of talking about public speaking to the High Plains 4-H Club. While I sincerely hope that the approximately 20 kids and their parents who attended benefited from the comments I made, what I received was of equal value – a renewed appreciation of the importance of being part of a community. When I Googled “definition [...]

LinkedIn as a Networking Tool

LinkedIn is the premier social media site for networking with current and potential business associates. Yet, many people think of is as just an electronic “rolodex” that they turn to only when they are looking for a job or a specific resource. One of the most important things to remember when using LinkedIn as a networking tool is that all those “contacts” are real people, and people like to hear from you just because you thought of them and wanted to say hello or to acknowledge them in some way, not just when you want something from them.   5 [...]

Make the Most of LinkedIn as a Job Search Tool

LinkedIn can provide powerful tools to job seekers, but only if they take advantage of them strategically. In the past couple of weeks I have provided LinkedIn training for two groups of job seekers, and have also tutored some job seekers in private sessions, making me more aware than ever of the things people often miss when using this powerful site. Here are some hints for making the most of your time and LinkedIn’s abilities: LinkedIn Tools for Job Seekers to Land Their Next Position Make your profile work for you in key word searches. From the headline through the [...]

Make the Most of Meetup

With over 20 million members make up nearly 200,000 Meetup groups in nearly 200 countries, chances are you’re a member. But are you making the most of your membership? Wikipedia describes Meetup as: “An online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. Meetup allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest, such as politics, books, games, movies, health, pets, careers or hobbies. Users enter their postal code or their city and the topic they want to meet about, and the website helps them arrange a place and time to [...]

Avoid Sending Mass Invites to Connect on Social Media

One of my pet peeves is how easy it is to inadvertently send out mass requests to connect on some social media sites. Unfortunately, these invites don’t seem to be likely to stop arriving any time soon. Even people experienced on social media sites occasionally fall into the “trap” of clicking on something that auto-broadcasts invitations. The Issue: Actually there are two issues with sending these invite: doing so can come across as unprofessional and it can connect you to people you might not have chosen to connect with on that particular platform. Countless people have told me how sites [...]
