Pay It Forward and Give Back to Your Community

Have you thought about ways to pay it forward and give back to your community? Have you offered your services on a pro bono basis? Do you share your expertise with others through teaching or mentoring? Do you serve in leadership roles in your business or professional organization and/or in a community group? Maybe you volunteer for a nonprofit organization. Perhaps you help at your child or grandchild’s school or at your place of worship. I truly believe in the concept of generosity of spirit and have done my best to serve others with that mindset.   Ways I’ve Been [...]

Emphasize Your Strengths in Your LinkedIn Profile

It’s important to emphasize your strengths in your LinkedIn profile. Sometimes you might resist doing this for fear of sounding like you’re bragging. Take the StrengthsFinder assessment. Doing that will help you select which strengths to share and how to describe them   Background on the Strengths-Finder Assessment Psychologist Donald Clifton created this tool based on information from his research on people in leadership roles. Partnering with colleagues from Gallup over several decades, he conducted interviews with over 20,000 leaders. Drawing from those interviews and other research, he created a list of 34 strengths. Protecting Your Security on Facebook

Have you thought about protecting your security on Facebook? Feeling secure on Facebook is a top priority for my clients and the students in my classes. Some of these folks have even avoided Facebook completely due to concerns over security. Naturally, the Security and Login section within your Settings menu is the most important section related to this subject. You can find it by clicking on the little downward pointing arrow at the top right of your menu bar and then scrolling down to Settings and clicking on it. The Security and Login section is toward the top of the [...]

The Pros and Cons of Tagging People on Facebook

Have you thought about the pros and cons of tagging people on Facebook? Part of me likes it when I’m brought into a post someone else created. Another part of me gets annoyed when this happens. Tagging is when someone on Facebook identifies a friend in a picture. It also happens when someone enters the name of a Facebook friend in a post or comment. Doing either of these creates a hyperlink from the person posting to the personal page of the person being tagged. Depending on their settings, the tagged person gets a notification that someone tagged them. Cons [...]

Organizations – How to Highlight Them on LinkedIn

My organizations - how to highlight them on LinkedIn? I'm glad people bring that question to me. Giving back to your community through organizational involvement is good for the community and good for you. Sharing that involvement on LinkedIn benefits you and the organizations. Not only are you sharing your skills and knowledge for a worthy cause, you’re differentiating yourself from your competition. Think of your volunteer involvement as part of your personal and professional brand. You can use your LinkedIn profile to highlight the organizations to which you belong. Also, you can reference the organizations in your updates and [...]

Facebook Groups – Why Start One?

Facebook groups - what's the value of starting one? That is a question I’ve asked myself often during my years of working in social media. I’ve participated in a range of Facebook groups. Like anything else on social media, some have been more valuable than others. Recently, I decided to create a Facebook group that ties in with my new Meetup group: Simplify Your Social Media. At the first Meetup, someone asked if we could form a Facebook group. They pointed out that having one would provide a way for us to communicate between our monthly gatherings. So, to help [...]

Meetup Groups: The What, How and Why

This blog post: Meetup Groups: the what, how and why addresses many aspects of Meetup groups. Many people attend Meetup groups, yet they don’t really know how Meetup works.   What is Meetup and How Did It Get Started? According to Meetup’s Facebook business page: “Meetup is the world's largest network of self-organized clubs and community groups. We make it easy for anyone to organize their own local group, or find one of the thousands already meeting face-to-face.” Scott Heiferman, Matt Meeker, and Brendan McGovern launched Meetup in June 2002 in New York City. They created Meetup after seeing the [...]

How to Decide Whether to Connect on Social Media

Do you struggle with the question of how to decide whether to connect on social media? Many of my clients pose this question to me. The answer, as is often the case, is “it depends.” It depends on how you use the site, your natural networking style, your line of work, your gut instincts, and more. Whether you are doing the reaching out or responding to a connection request, here are some things to consider.   How You Use a Social Site Let’s say you mainly use the social site for personal matters. Then it probably makes sense to keep [...]
