Use LinkedIn to Grow Your Membership Organization

There are many ways you can use LinkedIn to grow your membership organization. These organizations can range from service clubs, like Rotary or Kiwanis, to professional associations to community organizations, like Toastmasters. Recently, I helped Nancy Winston (pictured above), a Toastmaster for over 40 years and a retired educator, to start using LinkedIn. Quoting from the Toastmasters International website: “Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that builds confidence and teaches public speaking skills through a worldwide network of clubs that meet online and in person. In a supportive community or corporate environment, members prepare and deliver speeches, respond to [...]

Group or Individual Instruction – Which Works Better for You?

Group or individual instruction – which works better for you? You might have a strong preference for one option or the other. Or it may be that either can work for you, depending on the topic and other factors. In this blog post, I focus on learning about LinkedIn in a group or class versus in a private tutoring session. Currently, about 90% of my private tutoring sessions, classes, and trainings are about LinkedIn. Along with teaching LinkedIn classes for the Colorado Free University for many years, I’ve provided LinkedIn trainings in many other settings. Examples include business networking [...]

Say Yes to New Opportunities

Do you say “yes” to new opportunities? In other words, when you have the chance to stretch yourself beyond your comfort zone, how do you respond? My tendency is to take the chance, and when I’ve done that, I’ve rarely regretted doing so. Here’s some recent examples of times that I’ve said “yes” and had wonderful experiences. Last-Minute Invitation to Present a Workshop Kris Pool, a Toastmaster leader in Wisconsin, and I have been connected for 14 years on LinkedIn. We are not in regular communication, though she occasionally comments on my posts. She’s a member of Professional Career [...]

The Impact of Words of Appreciation

Have you wondered how the impact of words of appreciation can reverberate throughout your circle and beyond? Last week, I provided a complimentary LinkedIn session to Eric Moore, a 24-year-old college student whom I met early this year. He’s from Liberia and goes to college in New Delhi, Delhi, India. We connected when he inquired about joining one of my Toastmasters clubs. It has a hybrid format and meets on a Saturday at a time that fit his schedule. Toastmasters is an organization through which you can improve your communications and leadership skills. As it happened, it didn’t work out [...]

Social Media and People Over 60

During a recent podcast interview, the host asked me to provide some perspectives on social media and people over 60. We discussed that many people in this age group find social media too complicated. Even when they’ve been shown the steps of how to do things on social media, they might have trouble remembering the steps. Or maybe they find the whole experience of being on social media pointless. I offered a number of suggestions for ways that people 60 and over can be safer on social media. We discussed the benefits of using these sites for someone in their [...]

Why Should Business Owners Use LinkedIn?

Why Should Business Owners Use LinkedIn? Since LinkedIn is often associated with getting a job, people sometimes ask me why should business owners use LinkedIn. In the 10 years that I’ve been providing LinkedIn tutoring and training, I’ve reflected on this question many times. Most business owners can see the point of having a profile on LinkedIn that represents them well. However, some of them are puzzled about what you would do on LinkedIn beyond having the profile. Benefits to Business Owners of Using LinkedIn   Showcase your brand. Key parts of your profile for showcasing your brand include the [...]

Adjust Your Trainings to Meet the Needs of Your Audience

Do you adjust your trainings to meet the needs of your audience? It can be tempting to develop a signature speech or training to share with all your audiences. As I’ve learned from being a part of Toastmasters, you need to meet your audience members where they are. As soon as you book a speaking or training engagement, pose some questions to the person who booked you. Find out what kinds of information related to your areas of expertise are of greatest interest to the audience. Develop your speeches and training materials so that you can easily mix and match [...]

Hats Off to Marie Leslie

Hats off to Marie Leslie – one of my dearest business colleagues. She and her husband are relocating soon from the Denver area to South Carolina. Recently, she and I had lunch, and I was so glad to get one more in-person visit with her before her big move. That’s when we had the photo taken that’s at the top of this blog post. Do you take the time to let your business colleagues know how much they mean to you? Too often, we take these folks for granted and don’t publicly honor them as much as we could. So, [...]
