Successful Self-Employment Tips at an Un-Job Fair

One of my favorite events of the year is the Un-Job Fair, sponsored by the Colorado Free University and held at their facility in east Denver on a Saturday in late May. Entrepreneurs come from all over the greater Denver metro area to discover ways to enhance their self-employment success. Space doesn’t permit me to elaborate on what I learned from each presenter this year, so I have highlighted some of the tips from three: Tamara Kleinberg, Brad Friedman, and Deborah Flomberg.   Tamara Kleinberg: Founder of The Shuuk, a Testing Ground for Cool New Ideas Give yourself permission to [...]

An “Ask the LinkedIn Trainer” Session

Last weekend I was down in Colorado Springs speaking to about 20 fellow Toastmasters (members of an international communication and leadership organization) about using LinkedIn. Typically when I train on this subject I provide information on both how to use the platform to its best advantage as well as how to make a personal profile really shine. For this group, I decided to poll the audience before I started my presentation, asking them to tell me what stumps them when it comes to LinkedIn. Then I wove my answers into the “standardized” part of my training presentation. Many of their [...]

Community is a Major Part of What Makes Us Human

Although my blog posts typically focus on some aspect of social media, a recent “real-world” experience that allowed me to sense a true spirit of community has inspired me to devote this week’s blog to the importance of community. Last week I had the privilege of talking about public speaking to the High Plains 4-H Club. While I sincerely hope that the approximately 20 kids and their parents who attended benefited from the comments I made, what I received was of equal value – a renewed appreciation of the importance of being part of a community. When I Googled “definition [...]

LinkedIn as a Networking Tool

LinkedIn is the premier social media site for networking with current and potential business associates. Yet, many people think of is as just an electronic “rolodex” that they turn to only when they are looking for a job or a specific resource. One of the most important things to remember when using LinkedIn as a networking tool is that all those “contacts” are real people, and people like to hear from you just because you thought of them and wanted to say hello or to acknowledge them in some way, not just when you want something from them.   5 [...]

Make the Most of LinkedIn as a Job Search Tool

LinkedIn can provide powerful tools to job seekers, but only if they take advantage of them strategically. In the past couple of weeks I have provided LinkedIn training for two groups of job seekers, and have also tutored some job seekers in private sessions, making me more aware than ever of the things people often miss when using this powerful site. Here are some hints for making the most of your time and LinkedIn’s abilities: LinkedIn Tools for Job Seekers to Land Their Next Position Make your profile work for you in key word searches. From the headline through the [...]

Make the Most of Meetup

With over 20 million members make up nearly 200,000 Meetup groups in nearly 200 countries, chances are you’re a member. But are you making the most of your membership? Wikipedia describes Meetup as: “An online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. Meetup allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest, such as politics, books, games, movies, health, pets, careers or hobbies. Users enter their postal code or their city and the topic they want to meet about, and the website helps them arrange a place and time to [...]

Avoid Sending Mass Invites to Connect on Social Media

One of my pet peeves is how easy it is to inadvertently send out mass requests to connect on some social media sites. Unfortunately, these invites don’t seem to be likely to stop arriving any time soon. Even people experienced on social media sites occasionally fall into the “trap” of clicking on something that auto-broadcasts invitations. The Issue: Actually there are two issues with sending these invite: doing so can come across as unprofessional and it can connect you to people you might not have chosen to connect with on that particular platform. Countless people have told me how sites [...]

Ask for Recommendations and Endorsements on LinkedIn

Potential employers, clients, and referral partners pay attention to the kinds of skills you are endorsed for. They also review the recommendations you have received. Yet many people remain reluctant to ask for public recognition for the work they do. Skill-based endorsements and recommendations are vital ways to make your profile stand out and encourage people to contact you rather than someone else in your business. Endorsements for Skills There are a few things to do, however, before you start requesting endorsements from your contacts: Begin by reviewing the skills currently listed in your profile to be sure that they [...]

Professional Gallery Adds Visual Dimension to LinkedIn Profiles

Are you using the professional gallery option on your LinkedIn profile? This oft ignored feature allows you to incorporate visuals and showcase yourself more effectively. And it’s very easy to add “media” items. When you are in edit mode, go into the summary section and you will see a small rectangle in the top right-hand corner. Click on that, and you will see the option to add a link or upload a file. Click on the appropriate link and follow the upload prompts. The types of things you can upload into your professional gallery are listed in your experience and [...]

Let Projects Section Help you Stand Out on LinkedIn

You can use the Projects section to make your LinkedIn profile stand out. Most of us have been involved in some kind of project-based work, whether as part of our paid work or as part of our volunteer lives. One of the reasons I like this section so much is that if your project has a URL, you can add that URL in the Project URL field. When you include a URL (such as to a website you created or worked on or a link to something on your own site), the viewer gets taken directly to what you want [...]
