People often ask me how I happened to become a social media tutor. And, like the story of how I met my husband, it is a story I love to tell.

However, it wasn’t until I read Andrea Sternberg’s terrific article “How to Create a Better Bio” in the July 20, 2015 issue of Baby Boomer Entrepreneur that it occurred to me that this story belonged in the Summary section of my LinkedIn page.

This is the way it appears there now:

In 2010, when I was 61, my manager said he thought I did a great job of explaining social media to our clients. We went on to ask me if I had ever thought of helping others in my baby boomer age group to understand and use social media.

That’s the day I figured out what I was supposed to do when I grew up!

I stayed at that job for three more years, using my evenings and weekends to create and build Boomers’ Social Media Tutor. In March of 2013 I gave my notice and began working for myself fulltime.

Some Questions to Help You Tell Your Company’s Back Story

  • How did you get interested in the type of services you offer and/or the products you provide?
    • Has this been a life-long passion or something you “fell in love with” more recently?
  • Did someone give you the idea to start your particular business (as happened in my case) or did you dream up the idea on your own?
  • What do you like best about having a business rather than a job? (For me, it’s the freedom to create each day’s unique experiences.)
  • What challenges have you faced as you followed the dream of launching your business?
  • What have been some unexpected delights for you as a business owner?
  • How did you transition (if this applies to you) from having a “day job” to working full-time in your own business?
  • Or, if you continue to have a “day job,” how do you balance that job with running your business?

How About You?

If you have a business, how did it get started? How would you answer the questions that I raised?
