Have you thought about ways to honor others on Facebook and LinkedIn? Celebrating Valentine’s Day this month has led me to reflect on this topic.

Acknowledging others on these social sites is an important part of enhancing both business and personal relationships. Consider creating a system of reminders so you remember to take the time to honor others.

Use Facebook to Honor Others

  • Meaningfully comment on a post shared by a business colleague or an organization you are part of.
  • Click on the Reviews tab of a company’s Facebook business page and write a glowing review of their business.
  • Share a post from an organization you are part of to either your business page, your personal page or both. Write a short introductory note about this post and why you are sharing it. Be sure to tag the organization in your note. Also, tag key leaders in the group.

Use LinkedIn to Honor Others

  • Mention (tag) people when you create a post on LinkedIn. The process for doing this is much like tagging someone on Facebook. Type @ and then type the person’s first and last name. Select the person in the list of drop-down options that LinkedIn shows you. For example, if you made a presentation to a group, mention the person who invited you to speak to the group. You can do this even if that person isn’t your connection on LinkedIn.
  • Comment on a post that a LinkedIn connection shares. Or you can share the post. Be sure to include your point of view in your comment.
  • Whenever someone comments on a post that you shared, be sure to acknowledge that comment.
  • When your LinkedIn connections get new jobs or celebrate work anniversaries, congratulate them. You will find the announcements of these jobs and anniversaries in the Notifications section.
  • Endorse a LinkedIn connection for skills you know they have.
  • Write a recommendation commending a LinkedIn connection for how well they conducted themselves in one of the positions in their Experience section.
