Have you thought about using LinkedIn to grow your volunteer membership organization?

Recently, I was honored to share a presentation on this topic for members of the Volunteer Voyageurs Passport Rotary Club. Members of this club live in southern Alabama and attend meetings virtually through Zoom. They really appreciated getting these tips and were excited to start applying them.

Rotary created passport clubs for people who want to be part of Rotary, yet are unable to attend in-person meetings.

In case you’re not familiar with Rotary, here’s a description of it from Wikipedia:

Rotary International is an international service organization which brings together business, professional, and community leaders in order to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance goodwill, peace, and understanding in the world.”

I’ve given a similar presentation to members of Toastmasters clubs in both the US and in England. The ideas I share in this presentation are applicable for a wide range of volunteer membership organizations.

Include Your Involvement in the Organization in Your LinkedIn Profile

  • Reference your involvement in the organization in the About section of your profile. Share what drew you to join the organization and what benefits you get from being a member.
  • Add a link to the organization’s website to the Contact Info section of your profile. You could also add a link to its Facebook page or another social media account.
  • Feature posts that you create on LinkedIn about the organization. You can also feature photos and videos of the organization’s meetings and events.
  • List your volunteer leadership roles as positions in your Experience section of your profile. Doing so gives more visibility to the organization than only putting this information into the Volunteer Experience section.
  • Include projects you’ve done with the organization in the Projects section of your profile. Be sure to reference other members of the organization who were involved with these projects.

Share Posts on LinkedIn About Your Activity with the Organization

  • Post about upcoming meetings and events of the organization.
  • Reference past meetings and events and what you gained from attending them.
  • Tag the organizers and guests speakers for these meetings and events as a way of honoring them.
  • Celebrate the successes of the members of your organization.

Engage with the Posts of Your Organization’s Company Page on LinkedIn

  • Share posts from your organization’s national or international company page to your profile.
  • Do the same for posts that your local chapter or club shares on its company page if it has one.
