What’s the Point of Sharing and Schmoozing on LinkedIn?

Many people have asked me - what's the point of sharing and schmoozing on LinkedIn? This question led me to create my first webinar: “Sharing and Schmoozing on LinkedIn.” It’s available, free, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BVwP4tXK4o Check it out, and while you’re there, consider subscribing to my YouTube channel. This post covers some reasons people don’t share and schmooze on LinkedIn and the value of doing it. In case you haven’t heard of the word “schmooze,” it is Yiddish and comes from the root (also Yiddish) “schmuesn” which means “to chat.” Jewish immigrants brought this word to the US where it has [...]

Reasons Why Millennials Like Using LinkedIn

Although most of my clients are 50 and older, I have a special place in my heart for millennials. Many of my closest business advisers and associates are millennials. Last month, I was researching the topic of millennials and LinkedIn for a talk at my Toastmasters club. According to the articles I found, LinkedIn often doesn’t appeal to millennials because: They consider it boring compared to the sites they typically frequent. It can feel too structured to them, and they can become overwhelmed with all the sections to complete in their profile. They don’t see very many other millennials to [...]

Three Ways for Job Seekers to Stand Out on LinkedIn

Job seekers: be sure to have your LinkedIn profile really stand out when potential employers find it. To accomplish that you need a headline that attracts attention. Plus you need a summary that illustrates how you will be an asset to their business. But those essentials are not enough. There are other, often over-looked profile features which can differentiate you from your competition.   Highlight Your Certifications Section Make sure to include all relevant certifications and licenses. List all the specifics: the exact name of the certification or license, certifying authority, and date granted. If applicable, include the license or certificate [...]

Enhance Your Influence Through Facebook Groups

Are you using Facebook groups to encourage people to view you as an influencer? A local social media colleague of mine, Hollie Clere, is doing just that. Co-owner of The Social Media Advisor with eight years of social media consulting under her belt, Hollie recently launched a Facebook group called #BeAwesome in Social Media. https://www.facebook.com/groups/617631178389147/ In just under a month, the group has grown to over 200 members, with Hollie’s questions and tips leading to lively discussions. Should you wish to create a group, be careful and detailed when you outline its purpose and how it operates. Be very specific [...]

Tailor Your LinkedIn Profile

Your LinkedIn profile is one of the most important showcases available. By tailoring it, you enhance your brand by emphasizing key information. There is a standard template for a LinkedIn profile, but you can move sections around within the template. And for most sections of your profile, you can move around the listings within that section.     Repositioning Sections of Your Profile Click on the icon with the up and down arrow at the top right of a section, and drag that section to wherever you want it to appear in your profile. For example, I clicked on that [...]

What’s Your Company’s “Back Story”?

People often ask me how I happened to become a social media tutor. And, like the story of how I met my husband, it is a story I love to tell. However, it wasn’t until I read Andrea Sternberg’s terrific article “How to Create a Better Bio” in the July 20, 2015 issue of Baby Boomer Entrepreneur that it occurred to me that this story belonged in the Summary section of my LinkedIn page. This is the way it appears there now: In 2010, when I was 61, my manager said he thought I did a great job of explaining [...]

Your Personal Brand on Social Media

When people talk about you, how do they describe you? If you have a company, what do people think about when your company comes to mind? How do they describe your company to others? These questions revolve around the concept of “brand”, meaning how we (or our companies) come across to others. Even though you may not have a company and have no plans to start one, you still have a brand, which is essentially your reputation.   Concepts of Personal Branding from The Start-Up of You One of my favorite books on this topic is The Start-up of You [...]

Your Brand and How Social Media Can Help Showcase It

When people think of you, how do they describe you? If you own a business, what do your clients and customers have to say about it? How does your presence on social media reflect your brand? Definition of Branding According to the American Marketing Association Dictionary: A brand is the "name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller's product distinct from those of other sellers.” Often we think of logos when we think of a brand, such as this logo of the University of Wisconsin- Madison where I went to college. But a brand goes far beyond [...]
