The professional social networking sites LinkedIn has helped countless people to find jobs, organizations, leads, and customers.

Today, LinkedIn helped me to find a tribe.

Business Owners

Ever get invited to investigate an organization that you didn’t know much about?

In the old days (as in prior to about 2008), you would find out about these organizations through a co-worker, business colleague, or perhaps by being solicited directly by the organization.

Nowadays you can find out about these organizations via a connection you made through social media.

Julie Genovesi Reaches Out to Me Via LinkedIn

Case in point – five days ago Julie Genovesi with New York Life Insurance sent me an invite to connect on LinkedIn.  Since she looked someone I would like to get to know better, I accepted her invite to connect.

Then, following my standard practice, at the time I accepted the invite, I asked her how we might have met and what prompted her to send me the invite.

She wrote back that she found my profession interesting and that’s why she invited me to connect. She went on to say that she is the President of the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce North Leads Group and that they are always looking for speakers, especially on social media.

Now she really had my attention, as I am very keen on giving talks about social media.

Next thing I know, she invited me to an orientation for potential members of the Colorado Women’s Chamber as she will be talking about her leads group there.

Figuring it would be great place to meet some other business women, I decide to attend.

Finding a Tribe

Over 20 dynamic business women show up for this orientation.  From the outset, I knew that attending it was worth my time and the $2.00 it took to feed the parking meter in downtown Denver.

By the end of the interactive and informative presentation by Nancy Walsh, Member Services Director, I am sold on the value to me of joining the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce.

Here are just a few of the reasons why:

  • Over 1,400 members, the majority of whom are in the Denver metro area
  • Opportunity to participate in a leads group, and 3 of the 5 groups are within a 20 minute drive from my home
  • Member rates at all the top notch events they sponsor, and they have a LOT of events
  • Opportunity to let the members know about special deals I am offering
  • Once I become a member at the business level, the chance to present at one of their professional seminars
  • The cost of membership fits my budget

Back to You

Who are your tribes? Where do you go to get energized, get business, and give back to the community?

Did you find any of these tribes via a connection you made on social media?

It would be terrific to hear about your experiences.
