What classes have you taken lately? Are you pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree? What certifications are you working on?

In what I often call my “day job,” I work as an enrollment advisor for the College for Financial Planning. That means helping professionals in the financial planning industry assess their educational needs. Then I guide them through a process of determining which distance educational programs that our college offers will best meet their needs. If you are curious about our college, check out www.cffpinfo.com

It doesn’t just take money and time to go back to school.

It also takes mental capacity and a desire to achieve a goal. The vast majority of the students at our college are working a minimum of 40 hours per week. Many work more than that. Just about all of them have busy personal lives.

I admire every single student I serve.

As someone in my 60s and with two master’s degrees, I could just sit back and coast into my retirement years, never sitting in a classroom or a taking a webinar again.

Instead, I choose to be like my mother, Natalie Eder, who chose to learn Spanish at a community college when she was in her 50s. She chose to reread the classics in her 40s when I was in high school. She was always learning.

Right now, I choose to pursue an educational certificate – the Social Media Manager Certificate offered by Colorado Free University here in Denver. Not only will I learn even more about social media than I already know, I will have more credibility as a social media tutor.

Ultimately I will serve more clients, who in turn will become more social media savvy. That is what is driving me – being of service to more people in a more comprehensive manner.

Of the 16 core offered courses in this certificate program, a minimum of six are required, along with the Hands-On Web and Social Media Marketing Lab. Already I have taken Everything You Wanted to Know about Blogging. I have registered for LinkedIn 201: LinkedIn for Business Advancement.

Most likely I will also take Facebook for Business: Social Media 101, Google+ and Twitter: Social Media 201, Get Your Business Listed on the First Page of Google, and  Promote Your Business using Blogs, YouTube and other Social Media.

Are you a lifelong learner? Have you returned to school for a certificate or a degree?

If so, what motivates you to do that? Who are your role models for being a lifelong learner?

As always, I look forward to hearing what my readers have to share.
