A Toastmaster Tribute to Amal Al-Saffar

Recently I helped to recognize and pay a Toastmaster tribute to Amal Al-Saffar, a member of Excelsior Advanced Toastmasters. Amal joined our club last fall and quickly captured our hearts. In her late 20s, she is by far the youngest member of our club. Yet, she has a depth of experience as a leader and speaker that inspires us all. She wanted the challenge of participating in our club with its highly experienced leaders and speakers.   Accomplishments of Amal Al-Saffar Amal’s been a gifted speaker and leader since she was young. As a teenager in her home country of [...]

Do you participate effectively in online meetings? These days, we find ourselves in online meetings more often than ever. Restrictions in face-to-face gatherings due to the impact of COVID-19 vary by state and can change daily. A number of states have a shelter-in-place (stay-at-home) order, such as Colorado where I live. As a result, many face-to face meetings have moved online to platforms like GoToMeeting or Zoom. Since Zoom is a new tool for many people, here are some tips for participating effectively using this site.   Using Zoom for Video Conferencing For those of you unfamiliar with Zoom, Eric [...]

What I Learned From the Book Inspire Integrity: Chase an Authentic Life

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what I learned from the book Inspire Integrity: Chase an Authentic Life by Corey Ciocchetti. The book came to my attention when he presented at the recent Toastmasters International convention. For those not familiar with Toastmasters, it’s the premier organization for helping people improve their communication and leadership skills. Learn more about the organization and the many benefits of membership at www.toastmasters.org.   Ciocchetti’s Basic Premise Ciocchetti’s mission is to inspire people to live an ethical life with high moral standards.   There are special considerations when using LinkedIn as an Attorney, Accountant Financial Advisor, or a related professional. Are you one of these types of professionals? If so, keep in mind that you typically have a range of compliance requirements you need to comply with on social media. These requirements will vary by profession and even by companies within a profession. Often these requirements restrict some types of information what you can include in your LinkedIn profile. Also, when you want to post on LinkedIn, you will likely need to get the post approved by compliance. Some companies will also [...]

Protecting Your Security on Facebook

Are concerned with protecting your security on Facebook? Feeling secure while using your Facebook account is a top priority for everyone these days. Some people are even avoiding Facebook completely due to concerns over security.   General Considerations I’ve noticed that there seems to be a higher than usual number of people having their Facebook accounts hacked lately. So, I decided to rerun some security-related information I published earlier this year. More and more often, people are accessing Facebook from their mobile app rather than their computer. Yet, when dealing with security-related matters, such as changing your password, I suggest [...]

The Value of Sharing and Schmoozing on LinkedIn

Many people aren’t aware of the value of sharing and schmoozing on LinkedIn. Some people don’t realize the value of using these features of LinkedIn. Others might want to use them, but they don’t know how to do so. In case you haven’t heard of the word “schmooze,” it comes from the Yiddish word schmuesn which means “to chat.” Synonyms for schmooze are talk, converse, mingle, mix, hobnob, or network.   Why Some People Don’t Share on LinkedIn They don’t know it’s even an option to share something on LinkedIn. They don’t see the point of sharing. They don’t know [...]
