Use Social Media to Commend Others

Has someone done a terrific job for you lately? Maybe it was a home service, such as carpet cleaning or painting. Perhaps it was a professional service, such as accounting or insurance. In addition to using the online reputation services such as Yelp or Google reviews, consider commending them (or their company) via a social media site, such as Facebook or LinkedIn. Rate Your Service Provider on Their Facebook Business Page The next time you get great service from a business, go to Facebook and search for their business page and choose one or more of these thank you options: [...]

Investigating the New Format of the LinkedIn App

The new format of the LinkedIn App appeals to me, for the most part, because they have improved the user experience. The old version had a lot of limitations, so it’s good to see these improvements. What Are LinkedIn Experts Saying? One of the things I like to do when something new comes out is watch a YouTube video about it by someone in the know. Fortunately, LinkedIn expert Viveka Van Rosen recently posted a new one on her YouTube channel. Having already watched it a couple of times, I have a better understanding of the functionality of this app. Here [...]

Consistency in Social Media Marketing

Have you created consistency across your social media sites? In order for you to come across as a dependable, reliable, and up-to-date professional, it is imperative to have consistency throughout all aspects of your online presence. Most people already realize that they need to have consistency between their website and their hard-copy (printed) marketing materials, such as business cards, fliers, and brochures. But they aren’t always as vigilant when it comes to creating that same consistency across their social media sites so that they are not only consistent with each other but also with the website and hard-copy marketing materials. [...]

Control Who You Connect With on Social Media

When people you know are setting up their social media accounts, remind them to avoid having the site send out invites for them. Often Facebook or LinkedIn newcomers think they must allow the site to invite folks from their email address book to connect with them. Then they blame the site for “making” them send out a mass email. The sites do this on purpose. There is a point where it appears that you can’t progress in setting up your account unless you allow LinkedIn to send out these invites. Here’s the work-around: Log out of LinkedIn Open a new [...]

Communicating Via Caring Bridge

There are times when Facebook or other social sites may not be appropriate venues. A good example is when someone has a major health issue. They or a loved one may want to share their health status with friends and family members so they can be aware of what’s going on. Having this option means the sick person can concentrate on getting well rather than on fielding a lot of well-meaning phone calls and emails. Caring Bridge can be a good choice for this kind of communication. Find out more about it at www.caringbridge.org “Caring Bridge is a charitable nonprofit [...]

Use Social Media to Connect People

One of the many benefits of being active on social media is that you can use it to connect people who could benefit from knowing each other. These could be potential referral partners, potential providers or clients, and much more. When you make these kinds of introductions, the people you help will truly appreciate your thoughtfulness. Plus, it helps you stay “top of mind” when they meet people who might need your services.   However, when using a social site (rather than an email or phone call) to make such introductions, you need to know that the people you are [...]

Tailor Your LinkedIn Profile

Your LinkedIn profile is one of the most important showcases available. By tailoring it, you enhance your brand by emphasizing key information. There is a standard template for a LinkedIn profile, but you can move sections around within the template. And for most sections of your profile, you can move around the listings within that section.     Repositioning Sections of Your Profile Click on the icon with the up and down arrow at the top right of a section, and drag that section to wherever you want it to appear in your profile. For example, I clicked on that [...]

Dealing with Notifications on Social Media

Are you getting too many notifications on social media? Many of my clients tell me they’re frustrated by the number of notifications they receive each day. For example, I know someone who made a relative of hers a “close friend” on Facebook. Then she set up her notifications so that every time the relative posted on Facebook, she was notified. Not only that, but she had the notifications arriving as texts on her mobile phone. She’d be in the middle of a business meeting and get distracted by the steady flow of texts indicating that her relative had posted something. [...]

Are You Being Overly Promotional on Social Media?

If more than 20% of your posting on social media is promotional, you could be turning people off. Keep in mind that people go to social media to be informed, entertained, and uplifted. They don’t go there to be “sold” on your services or even to see a lot of “hype” about what is going on with your business. Yet, if you provide value to your social media connections, they will be eager to see your next post, update, tweet, etc. Just the other day, someone tagged me in a Facebook post, noting that she doesn’t usually post her speaking [...]

Rocking a Panel Presentation

On Wednesday, September 30th, a panel made up of seven members of Colorado Women in Social Media did an awesome job presenting “Becoming an Influencer” at Denver Startup Week. Over 200 people attended, and many more had to be turned away for lack of space. As mentioned in last week’s post, “Prepping for a Panel Presentation,” this appearance had been in the works for several of months, spearheaded by Valerie Morris, Founder and Account Manager at Tintero Creative. See that post for tips on how to prepare for and promote a panel presentation. This one is devoted to giving the [...]
