Volunteer Leadership in the LinkedIn Experience Section

Expand your LinkedIn Experience section by including volunteer leadership positions past and present. Many people include these contributions in the Volunteering Experience and/or in the Organizations sections. However, there is no reason not to include key volunteer leadership roles in the Experience section along with paid work positions. And there are many reasons to do so.   Benefits of Including Volunteer Leadership Roles in Your Experience Section When you include a volunteer leadership role in your Experience section, other members of that organization can write you recommendations for your contributions in that role. Recommendations are important part of your profile. [...]

Stepping Away From Social Media

What has been your experience with stepping away from social media? Can you even imagine doing it? With summer just around the corner and many people planning vacations and/or trips to visit loved ones, this topic has been on my mind. Recently I traveled to northeast Oklahoma to spend time with family members. During those few days, I found myself truly relaxing and slowing down. It was good for me. Though I did check my Facebook newsfeed occasionally, I rarely thought about social media during those precious days. Instead, I focused on my loved ones. This experience reminded me of [...]

Enhance Your Influence Through Facebook Groups

Are you using Facebook groups to encourage people to view you as an influencer? A local social media colleague of mine, Hollie Clere, is doing just that. Co-owner of The Social Media Advisor with eight years of social media consulting under her belt, Hollie recently launched a Facebook group called #BeAwesome in Social Media. https://www.facebook.com/groups/617631178389147/ In just under a month, the group has grown to over 200 members, with Hollie’s questions and tips leading to lively discussions. Should you wish to create a group, be careful and detailed when you outline its purpose and how it operates. Be very specific [...]

Find Your Social Media Tribe

Do you have a social media tribe? By that I mean, who are the folks you consistently go to with questions about using social media? Who are the people whose social media postings you find yourself sharing most often? My social media tribe is Colorado Women in Social Media (CWSM). I chose them because I wanted to be part of a tribe that values inspiration, education, and collaboration. CWSM Members in the photo are back row from far left: Michelle Hoglan, Laura Atencio, Kimbirly Orr, Aimee Skillin; middle row from far left: Lisa Haas, Beth Johnston, Melody Jones, Joyce Feustel, [...]

Does Your LinkedIn Profile Represent You Well?

We all serve as role models, both in the real world and on line, whether we know it or not. Having digested that, now consider how your presence on LinkedIn is a role model for others, especially those in your field. Recently I consulted with someone in the field of executive placement. This individual works with senior business executives to help them land their next job. One thing I brought up as we reviewed his LinkedIn profile was that his own LinkedIn profile should be a good model for his clients. Does your LinkedIn profile do that for your clients? [...]

The Value of Mentors

Who are your mentors? They might be people you connect with on a regular basis, such as local colleagues who you turn to for business guidance. Or, in this age of social media, they could be people you rarely meet in person, or someone you have never met “in the real world”. They could be authors, bloggers, or other thought leaders whose work you respect. For me, as a social media tutor and trainer, I regularly seek guidance from my fellow members of Colorado Women in Social Media, as well as other local social media colleagues. In addition, I read [...]

LinkedIn Blog Posts – Tracking Their Impact

Are you using the LinkedIn publishing platform? By that I mean, are you posting blog posts directly to LinkedIn? As I referenced in Publishing Blog Posts on LinkedIn, there are many benefits to using this terrific feature. But after you publish your post, do you regularly check to see how many people have seen it, how many have liked it, who has shared it, and who has commented on it? If not, I recommend that you start doing this right away. When you follow up with people who have liked, commented on, and/or shared your post, they appreciate that you [...]

Friend, Acquaintance, or Business Associate? Handling Relationship Levels on Facebook

Ever wonder what to do when a business acquaintance sends you a friend request on Facebook? Many people limit their Facebook friends to people who are actually their personal friends in real life. So they simply ignore and deny friend requests from business acquaintances. However, I have been noticing that more and more of the folks I know through business use Facebook as a way to communicate about matters related to business. For example, a client who is a friend on Facebook used a Facebook message to introduce me to a potential client. So, I have decided to accept most [...]

80/20 Rule in Social Media

Have you been turned off by people and companies being too salesy and promotional on social media? I know I have. On social media as in real life, it’s important to remember that people want to be entertained, inspired, and informed. They don’t want to be sold something. Marketing via websites, billboards, brochures, and other traditional types of tools involve pushing information at people. However, on social media sites, people “pull” the information they want, meaning they only pull what interests them. They don’t want anyone pushing anything else at them. Take some time and review everything you’ve posted on [...]

Oversight and Ownership of Your Facebook Business Page

This blog title may sound very obvious – naturally a business owner needs to own their business page on Facebook. Another equally obvious way to say this is a business page needs to be connected to the personal Facebook account of its owner. However, as obvious as it seems, there can be challenges when a business owner has someone else create and manage his or her business page. One of the biggest challenges can happen when the hired assistant creates the business page from their personal Facebook account, rather than from the account of the business owner for whom s/he is working. [...]
