Preparing for LinkedIn’s Changes

Are you preparing for LinkedIn’s changes? As you may be aware, LinkedIn doesn’t announce when its changes are happening. Instead, they tend to gradually roll them out user by user. The next change for LinkedIn users will be the overall design of their LinkedIn profile. Also, the navigation tools are changing as well as certain features going away. While I don’t have these changes, one of my tutoring clients does. I was happy to see the new look “in person” so I could investigate it. Here are some of my thoughts on what I found: There are things that will [...]

Commending Others via Facebook and LinkedIn

During this annual season of giving,  consider commending others via Facebook and LinkedIn. Such commendations honor those people and companies that have served you well during the past year.   Here are some tips for how to do it:   Commending Others on Facebook Review people or companies on their business page just as you might post reviews on Yelp or Google. Start by searching for the person or company’s business page. You will find the Reviews option on the left side of the page. Some business pages will not have it available, but hopefully most will. Click on the word Reviews and select [...]

LinkedIn Can Promote Membership Organizations

There are many ways that LinkedIn can promote a membership organization. Recently, I did a LinkedIn training for the board of directors of the Denver Jewish Chamber of Commerce (DCJJ). They asked me to help them find ways to use LinkedIn to help them grow. The recommendations I gave this group can be successfully applied to other membership-based organizations. Ways LinkedIn Can Promote a Membership Organization Board members should include their position in the experience section of their own profiles for several reasons: Positions in the experience section get more attention than those in the organizations section. Positions come up in the [...]

Removing Facebook Friend Requests and LinkedIn Invites

Each of us has probably sent a social media invite on sites like Facebook and LinkedIn that we regretted sending. Ever wish you never sent that Facebook Friend request? Or have you ever sent a LinkedIn invitation you didn’t mean to send? When people first start using these sites, they often send out invites by mistake. Even experienced users have done this. Sadly, LinkedIn especially encourages its users to send out invites to large number of people and makes it easy to do so in error. Luckily there are ways to remove these inadvertently sent invites and requests. And for [...]

LinkedIn Profile – Just Have One!

When your career takes a major shift, it is tempting to create a second LinkedIn profile to reflect the change. Don’t do it! Recently I started working with a client who changed companies. To distinguish herself from her former professional identity, she created a second LinkedIn profile. Her original profile was quite robust, with over 500 connections. By the time she sought my help, she had over 200 connections on her second profile. What’s a person to do in this situation? Sadly, it is complicated.   Duplicate LinkedIn Profile - Use the LinkedIn Help Center Want to know if you [...]

Frequency of LinkedIn Emails – How to Adjust This Setting

Many people tell me that they want to reduce the number of LinkedIn emails that they get. But they don’t know how to do make this happen. When I was a newbie on LinkedIn, I was overwhelmed by the number of emails I received. Then I found the settings where I could adjust the frequency emails. I was delighted with this newfound info. Once I made these adjustments, I got only the types of emails I wanted. And my inbox wasn’t filling up with unwanted messages. Along with adjusting this setting, double check your “primary email” on LinkedIn. This is [...]

Three Ways for Job Seekers to Stand Out on LinkedIn

Job seekers: be sure to have your LinkedIn profile really stand out when potential employers find it. To accomplish that you need a headline that attracts attention. Plus you need a summary that illustrates how you will be an asset to their business. But those essentials are not enough. There are other, often over-looked profile features which can differentiate you from your competition.   Highlight Your Certifications Section Make sure to include all relevant certifications and licenses. List all the specifics: the exact name of the certification or license, certifying authority, and date granted. If applicable, include the license or certificate [...]

Your Professional Photo Enhances Your Personal Brand

Does your professional photo represent you well? Remember, your photo is one of the most important elements of your personal brand. I am frequently disappointed with both the quality of the profile photos I find on LinkedIn and other social sites. Too often these photos show the person in a casual environment, sometimes with family members and friends. At times, the way the person looks in the photo is not the way they show up in real life. Sometimes people use a variety of photos across their social sites, website, and other online environments. The better approach is to use the same photo on all sites (except [...]

Sorting Your LinkedIn Connections: Part 2 of a Series

Like Facebook and Twitter, LinkedIn offers a system for sorting your connections. To do it you use “tags”- a relatively unknown feature that can be very useful.   This post, the second in a three-part series on creating and optimizing lists on social media, covers LinkedIn. Last week we looked at Facebook, and next week we will focus on Twitter.   LinkedIn’s Tags Sort Your Connections According to LinkedIn’s help center: “Tags are simple keywords to help organize and sort your contacts. They can be added on a person's profile or from the Connections page.” LinkedIn includes some suggestions such [...]

LinkedIn Groups Are Worth Your While

Are you involved in groups on LinkedIn? If not, I highly recommend that you join and become active in at least a handful. The other members can be a great source of information. They may help you get ready for an interview, find a job, research a topic, prepare a proposal, or discuss issues of interest. The information in this post is drawn from the section on groups in the LinkedIn help center. Purpose of LinkedIn Groups Among the main purposes of LinkedIn groups is to provide a place for professionals in the same industry or with similar interests to [...]
