Social Media Basics – A Radio Interview with Deb Krier

Some of you may already have seen my post last night about the terrific experience I had yesterday as a guest on the weekly radio show hosted by the awesome Deb Krier on Mile Hi Radio. To hear what Deb and I covered in our time together, just go to the archive of the interview. Please be patient through the technical glitch at the start of the interview: http://milehiradio.com/archives/4251274D-D5ED-DCFE-022039D8F1D39A64_20121126.mp3 Each week Deb, a social media advisor, speaker and blogger, interviews someone with expertise in social media in this hour-long program. All the programs are archived, so if you want to [...]

I Am Thankful for Social Media Examiner

As I scroll through the posts on my Facebook newsfeed this week, it is so heartening to see all the posts, posters and quotes related to being thankful. Along with my family, friends, job, and volunteer connections, I am thankful for all the websites, blogs, and individuals I have found who help me learn more about social media. For me, the top of that list is the Social Media Examiner, my daily source of the most up to date information on what’s happening in the social media world. They publish a daily newsletter including links to their posts as well as relevant [...]

Online Marketing Law

Have you ever wondered if your online marketing efforts, including your social media activity, were staying within the law? I know I have. That’s why I attended the class “Twitter, Blogging and Lawsuits: An Intro to Online Marketing Law” at Colorado Free University. Taught by attorney Elizabeth Lewis, this class was jam-packed with important information for anyone active in cyberspace, especially business owners. Her class covered copyrights, trademarks, domain names, website text, liability issues, and social media sites. Prior to becoming an attorney, Elizabeth worked in the field of information technology and has an MS in Computer Information Technology. In [...]

Reaching Out to Raj: The Ripple Effect of Social Networking

I met Raj nearly 4 years ago via the Official Toastmasters Member Group on the LinkedIn social media site. He posted in the group that he needed some guidance for a speech project he was doing. No one in his club had done that particular project. By the way, Raj lives in the United Arab Emirates, half way round the world from Denver, Colorado where I live. Reaching out to Raj was one of the first times I offered to help a complete stranger via a social media site. Since we were both members of Toastmasters International, he didn’t exactly [...]

Connecting on More Than One Social Media Site

What are your thoughts about connecting with folks on more than one social media site? For example, do you find it beneficial for your Twitter connections to also be your LinkedIn connections? In large part, what I decide to do depends on how I met the person in the first place. If our initial cyberspace conversation was warm and inviting, then I am more apt to respond positively to a “let’s do Pinterest too!” suggestion. In the last few weeks I have met two women through Twitter: Marty Diamond of Diamond Website Conversion and Kim Starr of Starry Nights Social Media. [...]

Pinterest – Why Start Pinning?

Are you on Pinterest?  If not, why not? For those of you not yet caught up on the Pinterest bandwagon, I found this helpful summary of Pinterest on Wikipedia:  Pinterest is a pinboard-style social photo sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests, hobbies, and more. Users can browse other pinboards for inspiration, 're-pin' images to their own collections or 'like' photos. Pinterest's mission is to "connect everyone in the world through the 'things' they find interesting"[2] via a global platform of inspiration and idea sharing. Founded by Ben Silbermann (of West [...]

Speaking About Social Media

This past Saturday I had a terrific time speaking on social media with members of the Women’s Resources Group of the Colorado State Grange. It turns out this group was more savvy about social media than I had expected, and that made for a very lively and interactive experience. Here are some key points that I took away from this experience: Even if the program organizer tells you the audience is relatively inexperienced with social media, be wary of planning a talk that is too simplistic. Get to the gathering at least 30 minutes prior to the start time to [...]

Social Media Balancing Act

How many social media sites are you actively engaging on? By that, do you at least visit that site a few times a week? How many do you visit daily? How many do you visit several times a day? For me, I put Facebook, LinkedIn, and more recently Pinterest and Twitter into the category of active engagement, as in I visit those sites daily, and sometimes more than once during the day. So, those of you who live and breathe social media may be saying – big deal! Isn’t that what you are supposed to do? Maybe that’s what the [...]

Preparing a Presentation on Social Media 101

Do you give presentations on social media? I have given them from time to time, yet sometimes struggle with how to approach the presentation. So often there is such a wide range of knowledge, background and experience in the audience, that it can be tough to teach to a common denominator. I want the “newbies” to at least get something out of their time with me. And I want the more experienced folks to benefit as well. How do you approach these kinds of situations? In keeping with the importance of “know your audience,” I always do as much research [...]

Newsweek Magazine – End of an Era

Tonight on my drive home from work I learned in a segment on National Public Radio that Newsweek will stop publishing its printed magazine at the end of 2012. It was a sad moment for me. With so many more people getting their news through social media, blogs and other digital sources, print magazines of a general nature like Newsweek simply can’t attract enough readership and advertising to make ends meet. For those of us who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, there are other iconic magazines of our youth whose demise has preceded that of Newsweek – think [...]
