9 Ways to Use Twitter at Conferences

In last week’s blog post on using social media at conferences, Social Media and Conferences,  I primarily focused on LinkedIn as the place to go prior to, during, and after a conference. Several people who read my post brought up Twitter as their “go-to” social site when they are at a conference. “I find that Twitter is the best place to connect when I meet someone at a conference. It’s easy to use and an easy way to strike up a conversation.” Social Connections, LLC “My conference networking tool is Twitter. It definitely helps when the conference has a special hashtag.” [...]

Social Media and Conferences

Having just returned from the annual Toastmasters International conference, I have some thoughts on using social media to get more out of in-person events. Toastmasters is the premier provider of leadership and communication training in the world, so this was a large event – over 2,500 attendees from all over the world. But these ideas could be applied to a smaller gathering such as a state-wide or city-wide event, a local gathering for your industry, or a meeting for an organization you volunteer with.   Prior to the Event Reach out via LinkedIn, Facebook, other social sites, email, or even [...]

What’s Your Company’s “Back Story”?

People often ask me how I happened to become a social media tutor. And, like the story of how I met my husband, it is a story I love to tell. However, it wasn’t until I read Andrea Sternberg’s terrific article “How to Create a Better Bio” in the July 20, 2015 issue of Baby Boomer Entrepreneur that it occurred to me that this story belonged in the Summary section of my LinkedIn page. This is the way it appears there now: In 2010, when I was 61, my manager said he thought I did a great job of explaining [...]

Creating a Webinar on Social Media Basics

Collaborating with others to create a finished product can be fraught with peril. Or, if you are fortunate like me, it can be a joyous experience. A couple of months ago, Paula Adelman, Founder of BoomerSurf, proposed that we collaborate on creating a webinar to help Baby Boomers and those older than boomers to better understand social media. She wanted to offer a webinar as part of the launch of her BoomerSurf business and she knew that I specialize in tutoring and training Boomers to be more effective in their use of social media. It was a match made in [...]

Gain Confidence and Skills with Toastmasters

Do you want to be more confident? Would you like to improve your communication and leadership skills? If the answer to either of these questions is “Yes,” then I strongly suggest that you join a Toastmasters club. These clubs are available all over the world, and you can find the ones closest to you at www.toastmastersinternational.org.   The mission of a Toastmasters club is to “provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.” I have been a member of Toastmasters for nearly 20 [...]

Getting Too Much Info on Facebook?

Are you feeling overwhelmed with all the status updates you receive on Facebook? If so, you’re not alone. Many of the members of my Facebook for Beginners class at Colorado Free University complain about this problem, as do lots of other folks I know.   There are many possible for getting too many updates: maybe you have a lot of Facebook friends, maybe a few of your Facebook friends post continuously, and/or maybe you receive a lot of posts from business pages you have liked or from members of the Facebook groups you have joined. No matter the reason, there [...]

Use Social Media to Mentor Others

Do you mentor others through social media? There are countless ways to use social media to mentor others. And just as when you mentor people in real life, you end up benefiting just as much, if not more, as the person being mentored.   Not long after I got active on LinkedIn, I happened to read a discussion posted in the Toastmasters International LinkedIn group by a fellow named Raj. He was looking for some guidance on a specialized speaking project, and no one in his club had ever done that type of project, which involved interpersonal communication. His request [...]

Showcase Yourself in Your LinkedIn Profile Headline

How does your LinkedIn profile headline represent you? When I review a client’s LinkedIn profile in order to make suggestions for improving it, one of the first places I start is with their profile headline, which, if you are not sure what I am referring to, is found just below their name. Too often, people simply use the default headline, which is the title of their current position and the company name. In the case of business owners, it is often something like founder or owner or whatever they call themselves, plus the name of their company. This is not [...]

Learning Curves and Social Media

Change is often difficult. Yet, without change, we don’t merely stagnate, we get left behind. So many of my clients come to me because they don’t want to be left behind. Their professional colleagues talk about making great connections through LinkedIn. Their friends get and stay in touch with their family and friends through Facebook. And all kinds of people are using Twitter to stay up-to-date on current events Yet, sometimes my clients resist getting involved in social media because it feels like just one more thing to do, one more thing to learn, one more they don’t have time [...]
