Make the Most of Your Down Time at a Conference

Do you make the most of your down time when you attend a conference? Recently, I arrived a bit early to the annual green building and sustainability conference held in Denver by the U.S. Green Building Council Mountain Region. I wanted to be all set for the break-out session I was leading on LinkedIn for Emerging Professionals and Students. As it turned out, all the sessions were running a bit late and I had about 30 minutes before I could access the room where I was presenting.   Unexpected Down Time at a Conference – What Would You Do with [...]

Audiences for Posts on Your Personal Page on Facebook

Did you know that you can adjust the audiences for posts on your personal page on Facebook? Posts we make on our Facebook business page are public. The default audience for our personal page is Friends, meaning anyone who is a Facebook friend can see the post. However, there are times when having an audience of Public can make sense. At other times, using the option of “Friends Except…” is the best fit. If you want as many people as possible to see your post, use the Public option. Then, if a Facebook friend shares your post, all her/his friends [...]

Awesome Conference: Success for Women 50+

I’m glowing after attending the awesome conference: Success for Women 50+. Rarely have I had the opportunity to spend a day with a roomful of women, the majority of whom are 50 or older. Furthermore, we were unusually open about our ages as we celebrated being older women. Hats off to Charlotte Haymore – speaker, author, and life coach – for organizing and keynoting this remarkable event. She assembled a diverse range of presenters, every one of them sharing valuable tips and perspectives. A special treat for me was getting to know other five women seated at my table. We [...]

Be Strategic When Using Notifications on LinkedIn

I advise that you be strategic when using notifications on LinkedIn. If you don’t take this approach, you can get overwhelmed by notifications. Then you are likely to simply ignore them rather than use them. If you check notifications on a regular basis, even once a week, you can get some helpful information. This LinkedIn feature is one of my favorites, as it helps me to track on the activities of my connections. For example, LinkedIn will tell you when your connections are celebrating a work anniversary or gotten a new job. I’ve landed several new clients by commenting on [...]

How the Power of Weak Ties Can Work for You on LinkedIn

Have you ever thought about how the power of weak ties can work for you on LinkedIn? Wait a minute, you might be saying. What are weak ties? And how can they be powerful if they’re weak?   What are Weak Ties? Here is an edited version of the definition of weak ties from Wikipedia’s Interpersonal Ties entry: Interpersonal ties, that is the connections or ties between people, come in three varieties: strong, weak, and absent. Some researchers theorize that weak ties are actually responsible for most of the structure of social networks, as well as the transmission of information [...]

Use LinkedIn to Enhance Your Email Introductions

Do you use LinkedIn to enhance your email introductions? Perhaps I should back up and ask if you do email introductions. One of the many reasons I thrive in the entrepreneurial world is my knack for connecting people I think should meet each other. In fact, people I’ve introduced via email have complimented me on how well I compose these emails. One reason for this is that many years ago, I got the idea of including the URL to the LinkedIn profile for each of the people I’m introducing. I do this for a couple reasons. First, giving access to [...]

Maximize the Accomplishments Section of Your LinkedIn Profile

Do you maximize the Accomplishments section of your LinkedIn profile? Probably not. I say that because my experience shows that many people don’t know this section even exists. People tend to focus primarily on their summary, experience, volunteer, and education sections. So, while it’s easy to overlook this section, populating it can make a big difference. If you’ve never added anything to this section, you’ll need to start by clicking on the Add a Profile Section. Then scroll down to accomplishments and click on the arrow. Now you can start looking at the segments of this section and determine where [...]
