If you are an author, are you using social media to promote your book? There are numerous opportunities to use social media in this way. In May 2019, my daughter, Anne Feustel, published her book “Our Favorite Movies: How Films Affect Our Mental Health.” For this blog post, I’ll focus on how she is currently using social media to promote it during the early stages of her marketing program. Watch for a follow up post after Anne’s book launch party. In that post, I will share more ways to to promote your book using social media. First, a Look at [...]

Use Filters to Enhance Your LinkedIn Searching Experience

Do you use filters to enhance your LinkedIn searching experience? Using filters narrows your search results. With fewer people to look through, you can find the kinds of people you are looking for more quickly.   How to Find Filters Let’s say I want to get to know more business coaches in the Denver area. I type the words “business coach” into the search box and scroll down to the bottom of what LinkedIn shows me. Then, I click on the words “search for all results for business coach.” The filter “tabs” available to people with a free account are: [...]

The Relationship Between Your Business Presence and Your Personal Presence on Facebook

Have you ever thought about the relationship between your business presence and your personal presence on Facebook? Some people want to keep their personal Facebook life totally separate from their business one. Others prefer to blend them. Neither is right or wrong, so here’s some suggestions for both approaches.   Successfully Blend Your Personal and Business Lives on Facebook Clearly associate your personal page with your business life. Reference your business and/or your profession in the Intro section of your personal page. Add your business page as a workplace in the Work and Education section of the About tab of [...]

Job Seekers: Are You Making the Most of LinkedIn?

Here’s a question I often ask of job seekers: Are you using all the relevant features of LinkedIn? Even in a strong economy with low unemployment rates, job seekers can still have challenges. Effective use of LinkedIn can increase the likelihood of landing the job you want. Your profile and several other features can really help – if you use them to your best advantage.   Maximizing Your LinkedIn Profile as Job Seeker Photo. Be sure it’s an up-to-date head shot in which you are dressed as you would be for an interview. Headline. Recruiters suggest avoiding the words “seeking [...]

Are the Three Key Elements of Your LinkedIn Profile Representing You Well?

Are the three key elements of your LinkedIn profile representing you well? The most important elements of your LinkedIn profile are your photo, your headline, and your summary. Often, people checking out your profile will only look at these three things.   Three Key Components of Your LinkedIn Profile Your LinkedIn Photo Your profile photo is an important part of your brand and should represent you well. Ways to Leverage Your LinkedIn Connections

We have often talked about making the most of your content, but what about leveraging your LinkedIn connections? Too often, it doesn’t occur to LinkedIn users to reach out to their connections. To this type of user, LinkedIn is simply a resume on steroids. They put some time into their profile and then figure they’re all set. It is essential to remember that LinkedIn is a social site with the dynamic nature that implies. When we effectively engage with our connections, we can make LinkedIn work for us.   How Many Connections Do I Need to Have? The ideal number [...]

Make the Most of Your Down Time at a Conference

Do you make the most of your down time when you attend a conference? Recently, I arrived a bit early to the annual green building and sustainability conference held in Denver by the U.S. Green Building Council Mountain Region. I wanted to be all set for the break-out session I was leading on LinkedIn for Emerging Professionals and Students. As it turned out, all the sessions were running a bit late and I had about 30 minutes before I could access the room where I was presenting.   Unexpected Down Time at a Conference – What Would You Do with [...]

Audiences for Posts on Your Personal Page on Facebook

Did you know that you can adjust the audiences for posts on your personal page on Facebook? Posts we make on our Facebook business page are public. The default audience for our personal page is Friends, meaning anyone who is a Facebook friend can see the post. However, there are times when having an audience of Public can make sense. At other times, using the option of “Friends Except…” is the best fit. If you want as many people as possible to see your post, use the Public option. Then, if a Facebook friend shares your post, all her/his friends [...]

Awesome Conference: Success for Women 50+

I’m glowing after attending the awesome conference: Success for Women 50+. Rarely have I had the opportunity to spend a day with a roomful of women, the majority of whom are 50 or older. Furthermore, we were unusually open about our ages as we celebrated being older women. Hats off to Charlotte Haymore – speaker, author, and life coach – for organizing and keynoting this remarkable event. She assembled a diverse range of presenters, every one of them sharing valuable tips and perspectives. A special treat for me was getting to know other five women seated at my table. We [...]

Be Strategic When Using Notifications on LinkedIn

I advise that you be strategic when using notifications on LinkedIn. If you don’t take this approach, you can get overwhelmed by notifications. Then you are likely to simply ignore them rather than use them. If you check notifications on a regular basis, even once a week, you can get some helpful information. This LinkedIn feature is one of my favorites, as it helps me to track on the activities of my connections. For example, LinkedIn will tell you when your connections are celebrating a work anniversary or gotten a new job. I’ve landed several new clients by commenting on [...]
