Liking Business Pages on Facebook

Individual people have personal pages on Facebook. Companies, nonprofit organizations, public figures, and other public entities have business pages. Most people use Facebook primarily to stay in touch with people they know. However, some use it to obtain information about companies, brands, and/or organizations that interest them. If you want to learn more about any of these types of entities, you will need to “like” that entity’s business page. When you like a business page, all your Facebook friends are notified via their news feed that you have done so. Also, the profile photo for each page you have liked [...]

Participating in Facebook Groups

Are you part of any Facebook groups? Many people on Facebook like to join various groups that other Facebook members have created. According to Facebook, groups “provide a closed space for small groups of people to communicate about shared interests.” And, anyone with a Facebook account can create one. You might want to join groups related to a hobby, such as gardening, to get ideas or advice from other gardeners. Or you might join a business networking group to share ideas on starting and operating a specific type of business. You can actually join up to 300 groups – although [...]

Connection Invites on LinkedIn

When you send an invite to someone to connect on LinkedIn, do you personalize your invite? Many people don’t take the time to do this. They simply click on the “Connect” button and send the generic invite of “I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.”   This approach can work just fine when the person getting the invite knows you pretty well. However, when the person you are inviting doesn't know you that well or isn’t entirely sure who you are, there is a good chance they will ignore your invite. Here are some tips for sending connection [...]

Blogging – A Critical Element of Digital Marketing

One of the biggest challenges for entrepreneurs is effectively marketing their business in the digital world. Barriers often include limited financial resources, limited time, and limited knowledge. One of the best no-cost (other than the value of your time) approaches to building a strong presence in cyberspace is to blog on a regular basis. It is recommended to have your blog be part of your website to increase your search engine optimization (SEO) results. Blogging at least twice a month is necessary if you want people remember that you exist, and blogging weekly or even more often is even better [...]

Help Centers for LinkedIn and Twitter

When you get stuck on a social media site, do you turn to the help center, or do you call a friend, or do you wander around the site until you get frustrated and quit? My experience has shown that, for the most part, option one is the most useful. This post is the second in a two-part series on the help centers for Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Last week’s post focused on Facebook and Pinterest. This post covers LinkedIn and Twitter.   LinkedIn’s Help Center To access the Help Center for LinkedIn, click on your photo on the [...]

Help Centers for Pinterest and Facebook

In the process of preparing to teach my class on using Pinterest as a marketing tool, I found myself spending a lot of time in their Help Center, which has recently undergone a complete overhaul. There have also been some changes in Facebook’s Help Center. That made me think readers of this blog might like to know what can be found in these help centers. Very often I find myself directing people who come to me for help with a one of these sites to these pages, as they are full of more (and more detailed) helpful information than one [...]

Three Life Lessons And Their Social Media Connections

Recently I had the pleasure of hearing Nancy Wollen, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Kaiser Permanente Colorado, speak at a Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon. The life lessons she shared really resonated with me, so I started thinking there must be a way to tie them to my work in social media – which has become so much a part of life for so many people.   1. Do Work That You Love Nancy has been in the field of health care all her life and truly walks her talk when it comes to this lesson. [...]

Responding to Social Media Connection Requests

One of the most challenging aspects of being active on a social media site can be deciding whether or not to: Accept a friend request on Facebook Accept an invitation to connect on LinkedIn Follow someone who follows you on Twitter Follow someone who follows you on Pinterest Agree to connect with someone who has asked for a connection on another social media platform While some people simply automatically accept every invitation that comes their way, for most of us, there are many things to consider before we click accept or decide to follow someone who has followed us. For [...]

Dealing With Unwanted Ads, Posts, and Game Requests on Facebook

Many people find Facebook frustrating. Here are some common reasons they give: They don’t want to see the ads. They don’t care for some of the posts in their newsfeed. They aren’t interested in getting invites to play games. Here are some ways to address these frustrations.   Dealing with Unwanted Ads Keep in mind that Facebook is a free service, and the income generated by ads is an revenue stream which allows the service to remain free. That said, you always have the option to hide any ad you see. You can also hide all the ads from a [...]

Social Media Time Savers

While researching social media topics on Pinterest, I came across the results of an interesting study of 2,000 North American women and their use of social media. Here are some of the key findings of this study, which was conducted by the Pew Research Center in April 2013: Of those surveyed, 86% had at least one social media profile/account. The average user had 2.2 social media profiles/accounts. Respondents reported spending an average of 12 hours per week using social media. In my interaction with both current and potential social media tutoring clients, a common question is: “How do I make [...]
