Pointers for Perfect Profile Photos on Social Media

Recently I had a new professional photo taken, the first one in four years. Naturally, the experience got me thinking about profile photos on social media. Does your profile photo represent you well? Does it capture your personality and style? Is it appropriate for the social media sites where you use it? Use the Same Profile Photo Across Social Media Sites or Vary Your Photo by Site?  Some people prefer to vary their profile photos, depending on how they use a particular social media site. For example, if they use Pinterest primarily for personal reasons, they might have a more whimsical, [...]

Using Social Media to Spread Social Good

Many people bemoan the presence of social media, especially Facebook. Certainly there are people who post WAY too much, people who get into the “too much information mode”, and people who show a mean spirited side of themselves they might not reveal in face-to-face interactions. Despite all of that, the sheer magnitude of people on these sites, especially Facebook, makes it possible to spread information farther and faster than we could have imagined even just a few years ago.   Case in Point: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Unless you have been living under a rock for the last month, you [...]

Dealing With Duplicate Social Media Accounts

Many people have duplicate accounts, especially on LinkedIn. Most of the time they aren’t even aware of their “dual identity,” because they have forgotten they ever created their original account, as it was a long time ago. So they make a new one, without even realizing that it’s not the only one. The problem with duplicate accounts is that people get confused about which one is the real you. A year ago I created a business account on Pinterest just to check out the features of business accounts. Sometime later I decided to convert my personal account into a business [...]

Why Facebook?

What is the point of being on Facebook anyway? That was the question posed to me by two of the seven people the last time I taught “Facebook for Beginners” at Colorado Free University. You see, these people actually came to the class to build a case for NOT being on Facebook. They were curious about Facebook and why so many people are drawn to it. But they were very unclear about its value for them. Their reservations got me to thinking about what it is about Facebook that does appeal to me – and millions of other people whose [...]

Asking for Kudos on Facebook and LinkedIn

One of the great things about social media is that people can write nice things about you that everyone can see. And who doesn’t appreciate a genuine compliment? In fact, it is OK for you to ask a customer or client to write a review or submit a rating for your company on your company’s Facebook business page. They don’t even have to have “liked” your business page to write the review. People usually write a sentence or two about what they appreciated about their experience with your company. Similarly, it is perfectly fine to ask a customer or client [...]

LinkedIn Groups: To Join or Not to Join

To me, the groups feature of LinkedIn is the heart of this multi-faceted professionally-oriented social media site. By being a member of a group, you can: Gain more knowledge from experts in diverse fields Share your insights and expertise Connect with potential clients and referral partners Being that a LinkedIn user can only be in no more 50 groups at one time, it is important to be selective when deciding whether or not to join a group. The best way to do this is to review a group’s membership list, see what they discuss and the tone of those discussions before [...]

Hidden Tools on Facebook

Ever get frustrated while trying to do something on Facebook because you can’t figure out where the tool to do what you want to do is located? One reason that may be happening is that some of the tools are actually hidden! Really, you can’t see them until you hover your cursor over the relevant section. Typically that section is located in the top right-hand corner of whatever it is you want to manipulate. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why Facebook doesn’t make these tools more obvious, but then there are a lot of things about [...]

Summarizing Yourself on Social Media

Can you describe yourself and/or your business in 160 characters or less? Summarizing ourselves in any format can be a big challenge, but the small amount of space allotted on social media makes it even more difficult. There are several places within different social media sites where you need to be concise, yet clear and specific, in describing yourself: LinkedIn - the headline (displays right after your name) Twitter - the bio Facebook (business pages) - the description page (displays in the left hand column of the page under the word “about”) Pinterest – the “about you” section One of [...]

Removing Social Media Connections

Ever scroll through your Facebook newsfeed and find yourself only interested in the activities of a small portion of your Facebook friends? Or, if you are more of a LinkedIn user, do you find yourself trying to remember how you know the people whose posts you see in your newsfeed or wondering why you’re connected to them? Whether your social media platform of choice is Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and/or another social site, likely you have some connections you would rather not have anymore. I suggest that every few months you take the time to review your connections. Determine if you really are [...]

Business Connections and Facebook

Are you Facebook friends with people you meet through business groups and events? Or do you keep your Facebook account restricted to close friends and family members? When I first got on Facebook back in 2008, I figured I would be friends only with people I knew pretty well in the real world – family members and friends. Then over time, I broadened my circle to include people I know from Toastmasters, an international communication and leadership organization. Then I added people I know from my church and other organizations. The common denominator being that my Facebook friends only people [...]
