Thoughts on Getting Older

What are your thoughts on getting older? Since I'm celebrating my 75th birthday this week, I’ve been reflecting on what getting older means to me. Research findings vary in terms of classifying older people into different segments. The approach that makes the most sense to me is the following: People 60 – 74 are young-old People 75 – 84 are old-old People 85+ are the oldest-old Seeing that I’m leaving the young-old category and moving into the next one is sobering. Over the last few years, I’ve had a few more aches and pains. Yet, I’m very fortunate to have [...]

How to Improve Your Training Experiences

Would you like to learn how to improve your training experiences? Reflecting on my recent training experiences, I’ve considered what contributed to their being well-received. My advice relates to preparing for the training, delivering the training, and the follow up after the training. Prepare for the Training When you first commit to giving the training, get the basics of date, time, location, and audience. Book the training in your calendar and create a system for gathering the additional information you’ll need. Confirm the length, focus, and purpose of the training. Talk by phone or Zoom with your point of contact [...]

Why I’m Grateful for SHE Leads Group

As I approach my first anniversary as a member, I’ve been reflecting on why I’m grateful for SHE Leads Group. Since I joined this wonderful organization, I’ve felt like I’ve come home to the kind of group I’ve always wanted to be part of. The group truly embodies all the qualities that are important to me in a business networking group: Friendliness – especially to first-time guests Support – the degree to which members care about each other High energy level Well-run meetings that stay on schedule Follow-up – both by leaders and members   Why I’m Impressed with [...]

How Your Brand Comes Across on LinkedIn

Have you ever thought about how your brand comes across on LinkedIn? How you describe yourself in your LinkedIn profile is a key part of your brand. The items you choose to post about and the comments you make on the posts of others also reflect your brand. In a few days, I’ll attend an event with 25 speakers, including me. There are five speakers in each time slot and five rounds of sessions. That means I can select four other sessions to attend along with my own. I want to experience sessions from speakers whose brand resonates with [...]

Share Your Interests and Values on LinkedIn

Do you share your interests and values on LinkedIn? You may find that the business-oriented culture of LinkedIn doesn’t lend itself to sharing your interests and values. Use LinkedIn to Grow Your Membership Organization

There are many ways you can use LinkedIn to grow your membership organization. These organizations can range from service clubs, like Rotary or Kiwanis, to professional associations to community organizations, like Toastmasters. Recently, I helped Nancy Winston (pictured above), a Toastmaster for over 40 years and a retired educator, to start using LinkedIn. Quoting from the Toastmasters International website: “Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that builds confidence and teaches public speaking skills through a worldwide network of clubs that meet online and in person. In a supportive community or corporate environment, members prepare and deliver speeches, respond to [...]

Group or Individual Instruction – Which Works Better for You?

Group or individual instruction – which works better for you? You might have a strong preference for one option or the other. Or it may be that either can work for you, depending on the topic and other factors. In this blog post, I focus on learning about LinkedIn in a group or class versus in a private tutoring session. Currently, about 90% of my private tutoring sessions, classes, and trainings are about LinkedIn. Along with teaching LinkedIn classes for the Colorado Free University for many years, I’ve provided LinkedIn trainings in many other settings. Examples include business networking [...]

Say Yes to New Opportunities

Do you say “yes” to new opportunities? In other words, when you have the chance to stretch yourself beyond your comfort zone, how do you respond? My tendency is to take the chance, and when I’ve done that, I’ve rarely regretted doing so. Here’s some recent examples of times that I’ve said “yes” and had wonderful experiences. Last-Minute Invitation to Present a Workshop Kris Pool, a Toastmaster leader in Wisconsin, and I have been connected for 14 years on LinkedIn. We are not in regular communication, though she occasionally comments on my posts. She’s a member of Professional Career [...]
