Tagging on Facebook: Terrific or Terrible?

Ever wonder why you get notifications in your globe icon on Facebook from people you don’t even know? Chances are they are the result of having a Facebook friend “tag” you in a post they recently put up on Facebook. Tagging happens in photos – it’s when someone on Facebook identifies a Facebook friend in a picture. It also happens when the Facebook user enters the name of a Facebook friend in a post or a comment they make and creates a hyperlink to the personal page of that Facebook friend. Either way, the result is that a post that the [...]

Get Savvy with Your Company’s Statistics

Who are your clients? Which of your services is most in demand? Where does your business really come from? This blog post will deviate from my typical approach of sharing various tips and/or observations about using social media sites. Instead, I’m sharing what I’ve learned from analyzing some of the statistics I gathered over the last two years of observing my own company. As I plan my business strategies and goals for 2016, I need to take into account (among other things) the nature of my clientele, what types of services they’ve purchased, and how they found me. This process has [...]

Use Social Media to Get More Speaking Engagements

Many people grow their business through speaking and training. Sometimes they are paid for these engagements, and other times they do them to solely market their business. Effective use of social media can help you secure more of these engagements. Here are some ways to do so using LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.   Using LinkedIn Include key words such as “speaking,” “training,” and related terms in your LinkedIn profile headline, your summary, and in other parts of your profile. Include video clips from recent speaking engagements in your summary and in the appropriate job listings in your experience section. Create [...]

Tips for Temporarily Hiding Your Social Media Presence

At this time of the year, people often become motivated to “spruce up” their LinkedIn profile or perhaps create a business page on Facebook for their company. However, they sometimes want to tinker a bit with their profile without others seeing the “draft” versions. Or they may want to keep their business page under wraps until they are ready for others to see it on Facebook. If you want to temporarily hide your social media presence for these or any other reasons, here’s how to do it: Hide Your LinkedIn Profile Go to your Privacy and Settings section (visible when [...]

Use Social Media to Commend Others

Has someone done a terrific job for you lately? Maybe it was a home service, such as carpet cleaning or painting. Perhaps it was a professional service, such as accounting or insurance. In addition to using the online reputation services such as Yelp or Google reviews, consider commending them (or their company) via a social media site, such as Facebook or LinkedIn. Rate Your Service Provider on Their Facebook Business Page The next time you get great service from a business, go to Facebook and search for their business page and choose one or more of these thank you options: [...]

Investigating the New Format of the LinkedIn App

The new format of the LinkedIn App appeals to me, for the most part, because they have improved the user experience. The old version had a lot of limitations, so it’s good to see these improvements. What Are LinkedIn Experts Saying? One of the things I like to do when something new comes out is watch a YouTube video about it by someone in the know. Fortunately, LinkedIn expert Viveka Van Rosen recently posted a new one on her YouTube channel. Having already watched it a couple of times, I have a better understanding of the functionality of this app. Here [...]

Consistency in Social Media Marketing

Have you created consistency across your social media sites? In order for you to come across as a dependable, reliable, and up-to-date professional, it is imperative to have consistency throughout all aspects of your online presence. Most people already realize that they need to have consistency between their website and their hard-copy (printed) marketing materials, such as business cards, fliers, and brochures. But they aren’t always as vigilant when it comes to creating that same consistency across their social media sites so that they are not only consistent with each other but also with the website and hard-copy marketing materials. [...]

Control Who You Connect With on Social Media

When people you know are setting up their social media accounts, remind them to avoid having the site send out invites for them. Often Facebook or LinkedIn newcomers think they must allow the site to invite folks from their email address book to connect with them. Then they blame the site for “making” them send out a mass email. The sites do this on purpose. There is a point where it appears that you can’t progress in setting up your account unless you allow LinkedIn to send out these invites. Here’s the work-around: Log out of LinkedIn Open a new [...]

Communicating Via Caring Bridge

There are times when Facebook or other social sites may not be appropriate venues. A good example is when someone has a major health issue. They or a loved one may want to share their health status with friends and family members so they can be aware of what’s going on. Having this option means the sick person can concentrate on getting well rather than on fielding a lot of well-meaning phone calls and emails. Caring Bridge can be a good choice for this kind of communication. Find out more about it at www.caringbridge.org “Caring Bridge is a charitable nonprofit [...]

Use Social Media to Connect People

One of the many benefits of being active on social media is that you can use it to connect people who could benefit from knowing each other. These could be potential referral partners, potential providers or clients, and much more. When you make these kinds of introductions, the people you help will truly appreciate your thoughtfulness. Plus, it helps you stay “top of mind” when they meet people who might need your services.   However, when using a social site (rather than an email or phone call) to make such introductions, you need to know that the people you are [...]
