The Pros and Cons of Tagging People on Facebook

Have you thought about the pros and cons of tagging people on Facebook? Part of me likes it when I’m brought into a post someone else created. Another part of me gets annoyed when this happens. Tagging is when someone on Facebook identifies a friend in a picture. It also happens when someone enters the name of a Facebook friend in a post or comment. Doing either of these creates a hyperlink from the person posting to the personal page of the person being tagged. Depending on their settings, the tagged person gets a notification that someone tagged them. Cons [...]

Organizations – How to Highlight Them on LinkedIn

My organizations - how to highlight them on LinkedIn? I'm glad people bring that question to me. Giving back to your community through organizational involvement is good for the community and good for you. Sharing that involvement on LinkedIn benefits you and the organizations. Not only are you sharing your skills and knowledge for a worthy cause, you’re differentiating yourself from your competition. Think of your volunteer involvement as part of your personal and professional brand. You can use your LinkedIn profile to highlight the organizations to which you belong. Also, you can reference the organizations in your updates and [...]

Facebook Groups – Why Start One?

Facebook groups - what's the value of starting one? That is a question I’ve asked myself often during my years of working in social media. I’ve participated in a range of Facebook groups. Like anything else on social media, some have been more valuable than others. Recently, I decided to create a Facebook group that ties in with my new Meetup group: Simplify Your Social Media. At the first Meetup, someone asked if we could form a Facebook group. They pointed out that having one would provide a way for us to communicate between our monthly gatherings. So, to help [...]

Meetup Groups: The What, How and Why

This blog post: Meetup Groups: the what, how and why addresses many aspects of Meetup groups. Many people attend Meetup groups, yet they don’t really know how Meetup works.   What is Meetup and How Did It Get Started? According to Meetup’s Facebook business page: “Meetup is the world's largest network of self-organized clubs and community groups. We make it easy for anyone to organize their own local group, or find one of the thousands already meeting face-to-face.” Scott Heiferman, Matt Meeker, and Brendan McGovern launched Meetup in June 2002 in New York City. They created Meetup after seeing the [...]

Simplify Your Social Media Meetup Group

I created Simplify Your Social Media Meetup Group to help make things easier for business people using social media. If you live in the Denver area, I’d love to have you join us! To join, go to: https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-simplify-your-social-media/ You can attend any of our Meetup events without joining the Meetup group. However, to get the maximum networking benefit, I suggest you join the group. Also, to attend any of these events, you will need to RSVP in advance. You will see that I ask you to answer three questions before I approve your request to join. I did this to [...]

How to Decide Whether to Connect on Social Media

Do you struggle with the question of how to decide whether to connect on social media? Many of my clients pose this question to me. The answer, as is often the case, is “it depends.” It depends on how you use the site, your natural networking style, your line of work, your gut instincts, and more. Whether you are doing the reaching out or responding to a connection request, here are some things to consider.   How You Use a Social Site Let’s say you mainly use the social site for personal matters. Then it probably makes sense to keep [...]

LinkedIn Work Experience Updates – Make Public or Not?

What are your thoughts on the question of LinkedIn profile updates – make them public or not? Many of my clients tell me that they don’t want their connections to see the changes they’re making in their profile. There are plenty of reasons not to let your connections see these changes. Then again, there can be value in letting your connections know when you make an update to your profile. Typically, I don’t make my profile updates public. However, recently I added a volunteer leadership role in my Toastmasters club to my profile. For several reasons, I decided to allow [...]

How to Appreciate Others on Social Media

One of the many things people ask me is show them how to appreciate others on social media. It is especially appropriate in this season of giving to use social sites even more than usual to show your generosity of spirit. Here are some ways to use Facebook and LinkedIn to appreciate others. Appreciate Others on Facebook Like their Facebook business page. Get notified in your globe icon when there are posts on their business page. You do this by clicking on the Following tab, then click on notifications and click on the box by posts. Then, periodically share updates [...]

An Entrepreneurial Renaissance: Connecting 4 Generations of Entrepreneurs

Would you like to be part of an entrepreneurial renaissance connecting four generations of entrepreneurs? If so, consider joining the movement inspired by 4GenNow. This movement is gaining momentum around this country, as well as in other parts of the world. On November 17, I had the privilege of being one of nearly 200 people attending their first-ever Power Partners Summit. Sponsored by 4GenNow, it was held at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado. One of the best parts of the day for me was the talk by Amy Lynch (pictured above),  Generations Leadership Expert. She provided so many [...]

Want to Be Braver? Join Toastmasters!

Most people would like to be braver both in person and on social media. If you are one of those people, I highly recommend that you join a local Toastmasters club. “The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communications and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.” (from the Toastmasters’ website) Webster’s defines brave as “possessing or exhibiting courage or courageous endurance.” I believe that having more self-confidence helps people be braver. The concepts are closely [...]
