Have you thought to use LinkedIn to promote your organizations you support?

Many people think of Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter when it comes to promoting these organizations. In addition, LinkedIn offers many opportunities to spread the word about your organizations.

How to Use LinkedIn to Promote an Organization

  • If you’re a member of the Board, be sure to include that information in the experience section of your profiles. Positions in this section get more attention than those in the volunteer experience section. As a result of this attention,  more people will see “job changes” you make within the organization.
  • Another reason to include your leadership roles in this section is that members of the organization can write recommendations for you. These increase both your visibility and that of the organization as well.
  • All members should periodically reference the organization in their LinkedIn posts by promoting upcoming meetings or events. Adding photos or videos to these posts increases the number of people who will see them.
  • Members can write articles about the value of being part of the organization using LinkedIn’s publishing feature. FYI, this feature is only available to individuals using LinkedIn. Company pages can only share posts, not articles.
  • The organization’s LinkedIn company page is a good place for sharing posts about what the organization does and why. It can also be a great vehicle for showcasing individual members and their companies.
  • Encourage all members to “follow” the organization’s company page. By doing so, they can share the page’s posts to their own LinkedIn connections.
  • Another way for members of an organization to use LinkedIn is through being part of LinkedIn group. In the group, members can get to know each other better in a variety of ways. Examples include discussing organizational projects, asking each other for advice, sharing business tips, etc.

How About You?

Are you on the board of directors of a membership-based organization? Do you list that role in the experience section of your LinkedIn profile? Does your organization have a company page on LinkedIn? Does it have a group on LinkedIn? If so, how are the page and/or the group used to promote the organization? If not, why not? And might you be the one to get one started?
