Do you use LinkedIn to highlight your involvement in membership organizations? There are several reasons to do this to benefit both you and your organization.

If you are looking for a job, being part of one of these organizations might lead a hiring authority to notice you. So often it’s our connections to others in the community that lead us to our next job.

Perhaps you’re looking to grow your membership organization. By bringing up your involvement in it, your LinkedIn connections learn about your group and might come check it out.

Highlight Your Involvement with the Membership Organization in Your LinkedIn Profile

  • Weave your involvement in the organization into your About section. Find ways to connect what you’ve gained from the organization to your success in your profession.
  • Include current and/or recent leadership positions in membership organizations in your Experience section. Doing that means that others in the organization can recommend you on LinkedIn for your contributions. Also, putting the information in this section gives it more prominence in your profile.
  • Group your leadership roles for a single organization into one position in your Volunteer Experience section. For instance, let’s say you were the president, program chair and treasurer of a membership organization. You can group these under the title “Leadership Positions.” This approach makes more of an impact than having a series of separate positions.
  • Take advantage of the Accomplishments section to tout your involvement in membership organizations. You can list projects you’ve done as a member, as well as honors and awards you’ve achieved. In Accomplishments you can also list your organizations, what they do, and why you belong to them.

Share Information About Your Membership Organizations Through Your Posts

  • Post about guest speakers, fundraisers, and other special events that your organization is hosting. Share about these events both before and after they take place.
  • Honor one or more of the other members in your organization by mentioning them (tagging them) in a post. Perhaps the organization honored them in some way or they headed up a special project.
  • Use the special type of post called “Add a profile” to give a testimonial for another member of your organization. Perhaps they are wrapping up a year as club president, and you’d like to commend them for all they did.
  • Share posts from the organization’s LinkedIn company page or from other members. Typically, a state, national or international organization has a company page on LinkedIn. Periodically, review posts on that page and selectively share them on LinkedIn. Do the same with especially interesting posts shared by your fellow members.
