“Back to School” with Social Media

How did you first figure out how to use Facebook? Or how about Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+, or any of the other commonly used social media platforms?  Started playing around with that social media site Someone showed/told you how – either for free or you paid them to help you Through a book Via the Internet – such as by reading blogs, articles and other informational pieces Through an in-person or online class I have used all those ways, and others as well. Here we are in the first half of August, and kids are already gearing up for going [...]

4 Social Media Tips for Nonprofit Organizations

Are you active in a nonprofit organization? Are you connected via social media with that entity and with members in that entity? Having just spent a couple of years spearheading an initiative to get more social media involvement among members of a Toastmasters district that has over 170 clubs and 3,000 Toastmasters in three states, I have some thoughts on this topic.   Have Social Media Links on Your Website Even though I blog about social media, ultimately everything in cyberspace needs to circle back to an entity’s website. Whether that entity is a small business, a corporation or a [...]

Hashtags on Facebook

I always find it intriguing how the major social media sites add features that are found on other social media sites. Much of the time, those changes work for me, that is once I get used to them. One of the latest changes is that you will find hashtags on Facebook, whereas before these were found only on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr. Facebook introduced their use in mid-June of this year. Here is a link to Facebook’s explanation of using a hashtag (#) before a word or phrase: https://www.facebook.com/help/587836257914341   What is the Point of Hashtags? Quoting from the [...]

Linking Social Media Posts to Other Social Media Sites

When you post on Twitter, does that post also show up on your Facebook profile? Do your LinkedIn status reports appear as tweets on Twitter? When you pin to one of your Pinterest boards or repin another person’s pin, does that activity show up on Facebook? One of the beauties of social media is that you can tweak the settings of each site to determine whether or not to have this kind of sharing among the sites in which you engage.   Tying Pinterest Activity to Your Facebook Personal Profile For me, I like it when my Facebook friends link [...]

Volunteer Organizations Get the Word Out with Social Media

It was snowy day yesterday in the Denver area. So it wasn’t surprising that various events cancelled. Among the cancellations was a Toastmasters contest. For those not familiar with Toastmasters, it is an organization that helps people improve their communication and leadership skills. Being I am the social media chair for the multi-state entity known as a “district” in Toastmasters lingo, I was copied in an email about the rescheduling of this contest to a later date in April and asked to post the changes on our social media sites. Leaders in volunteer organizations are turning to social media more [...]

Over 40 business owners with a variety of social media background peppered Kelly with questions. She graciously and skillfully addressed each [...]
