LinkedIn as a Networking Tool

LinkedIn is the premier social media site for networking with current and potential business associates. Yet, many people think of is as just an electronic “rolodex” that they turn to only when they are looking for a job or a specific resource. One of the most important things to remember when using LinkedIn as a networking tool is that all those “contacts” are real people, and people like to hear from you just because you thought of them and wanted to say hello or to acknowledge them in some way, not just when you want something from them.   5 [...]

Networking at Social Media Classes

When you take a social media class or any other business-related class, do you come prepared to network? Having both taken and taught a wide range of social media classes, I am struck by the incredible networking opportunities these classes offer. However, in order to make this type of networking work you for you, you need to do some preparation prior to arriving at class, you need to reach out to your classmates, and you need to follow up afterwards. Preparations Prior to the Class Be sure to have your business cards with you. Think about what kinds of people [...]

The Power of LinkedIn

Are you active on LinkedIn? If you aren’t using this essential social media tool, you can find it at www.linkedin.com LinkedIn has a more professional orientation than sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Perceived by many as simply an electronic “rolodex” of business contact information, LinkedIn actually has a broad array of valuable features. One of my favorite LinkedIn features is the ability to join groups. There are groups whose purpose is to follow trends and share information on just about every industry you can imagine. There are groups for professional and volunteer organizations, hobbies, and for a multitude of [...]

Meeting Social Media Connections in Person

Last week when I was in Cincinnati for a Toastmasters convention, I got into a conversation with another Toastmaster about a social media training session that was held at the convention. He told me that he wasn’t at the session, but that he heard it was led by a woman named Crystal and the woman had blond hair. Disappointed that I had missed this session, I got to thinking that perhaps this session was led by my LinkedIn friend Crystal Thies, as she fit the description of the presenter. So, I messaged through LinkedIn asking her if she had been the one [...]

Facebook Events: If You’re Invited – Bring More People Too

When you are invited to a Facebook event do you invite friends of yours on Facebook to also attend the event? I encourage you to do so. There are several reasons why I believe this to be a good idea. Reasons to Invite Others to a Facebook Event That You're Invited To People who host events want to have a good turnout at the event. Bringing more people to the event enhances your relationship with the host of the event. Even those who can't attend have the option to follow up with the host to learn more about the topic. Those [...]

Strengthen Relationships with Social Media Connections

What is your approach to meeting in person with people you are connected with on LinkedIn or other social media sites? Do you reach out to them one by one and set up a face to face appointment? Do you invite a group of connections to an informal networking event? Recently a friend of mine decided to invite 80 of her connections on LinkedIn to an informal networking event.  Even though she was at least loosely associated with most of these people, only 2 of the 80 invitees wrote back they were coming. She cancelled the event. We talked afterwards [...]

6 Reasons to Network on LinkedIn

Do you know a business owner who would like to network more on LinkedIn? Maybe that person is you! Yesterday a business owner told me that he is on LinkedIn, but he just accepts invites. He doesn’t really do much with it otherwise. We talked for a bit about how he might expand his use of LinkedIn, especially how to use it for networking. I remember when I was new to LinkedIn and was exactly where he is now. For just over 18 months I had a skeletal profile on LinkedIn and to be nice to those who asked me [...]

Leaving a Job? Use LinkedIn to Stay in Touch

Ever leave a job and miss the connections you formed with your co-workers, clients, vendors, and everyone else? If you were especially close to any of those people, you probably were already friends with them on Facebook. Maybe you don’t really want to know about their personal business, but you would like to stay in touch professionally. You never know when that person could help you in some way. Or maybe you will be the one to help them. Rather than just rely on email or phone contact, consider connecting with them via LinkedIn. If you don’t already have an [...]

Use Social Media After Networking Events

One of the best things about social media is that you can keep in touch with people after you meet them at a networking event. In the not so long ago days, once you attended a networking event, you took the business cards you collected, put them in a rolodex or some kind of binder, and probably didn’t keep the names and faces together. Those days are long gone. However, what I have found is that it takes discipline to take advantage of social media sites, such as LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook, after a face to face networking event. For example, [...]

Use Social Media to Enhance your Experiences of Events

Have you ever felt a bit nervous about attending a retreat, workshop, convention or other gathering where you know few, if any, of the participants? Before social media, all we could do was show up at the event and do our best to feel comfortable with these strangers. Now we have all kinds of alternatives. One person who follows my Boomers’ Social Media Tutor Facebook page recently wrote about how she used the friending feature of Facebook to help her get to know fellow participants of an upcoming writers retreat. Luckily for her, the organization sponsoring the retreat had set up the [...]
