Many older women report feeling less visible as they age, particularly in professional contexts. This isn’t imagined—it’s a well-documented combination of ageism and sexism.
That’s exactly why choosing visibility—on our own terms—matters.
I’m turning 77 in December 2025, and my experience tells a different story from that of many other older women.
As a LinkedIn trainer since 2013, I use LinkedIn intentionally to stay visible, relevant, and engaged in my field—not to prove anything, but to continue contributing in meaningful ways.
While research shows that older women can sometimes feel overlooked in public and professional spaces, digital platforms can give us an opportunity to show up with purpose, clarity, and confidence.
How I Stand Out on LinkedIn
What works for me also works for professionals of any age:
- Lead with clarity: Profiles are strongest when they clearly state who you help and how.
- Share earned wisdom: Practical insight, reflection, and lived experience resonate far more than chasing algorithms.
- Use stories instead of self-praise: Client lessons, small wins, and real-life examples speak louder than claims of expertise.
- Show up as a real person: A warm photo, conversational writing, and the occasional behind-the-scenes moment build trust.
- Be consistent enough to be recognizable: You don’t need to post daily—just often enough that people remember what you’re about.
One way that I stand out on LinkedIn during the month of December is by wearing my Mrs. Santa sweater dress to many different functions, even if other folks aren’t dressed in holiday garb.
Then, I make a point of having folks take pictures with me and others at the event, which I post to LinkedIn and Facebook, such as the photo that’s connected with this blog post.
I’ve had this dress for nearly 10 years, and whenever I wear it, people get a kick out of seeing me in this festive outfit.
Some Final Thoughts
If older women sometimes fade from view, choosing to remain visible becomes an act of intention.
LinkedIn gives us a place to say:
I’m still here. I’m still growing. And I still have something to contribute.
If you’re navigating how to show up more confidently on LinkedIn—at any stage of life—I invite you to observe what resonates, experiment with your voice, and stay curious.
And if you’d like guidance along the way, feel free to connect with me here on LinkedIn or explore the resources I share. Visibility doesn’t have to feel uncomfortable—it can feel authentic, purposeful, and even enjoyable.
