Are concerned with protecting your security on Facebook?

Feeling secure while using your Facebook account is a top priority for everyone these days. Some people are even avoiding Facebook completely due to concerns over security.

General Considerations

I’ve noticed that there seems to be a higher than usual number of people having their Facebook accounts hacked lately. So, I decided to rerun some security-related information I published earlier this year.

More and more often, people are accessing Facebook from their mobile app rather than their computer. Yet, when dealing with security-related matters, such as changing your password, I suggest using the computer.

The most important security section within Facebook is the Security and Login section within your Settings menu. You can find it on your computer by clicking on the little downward pointing arrow at the top right of your menu bar.

Scroll down to Settings, toward the bottom of your drop-down options and click on it. You will then see the Security and Login section toward the top of the left-hand list of settings.

Security Sections to Review

  • Where you are logged in: This section shows the devices on which you have recently logged into Facebook. It’s very helpful because you can see at a glance if someone in an unfamiliar location has logged into your account. If that has happened, click on the three vertical dots. Then click on “not you” and follow the prompts. Once you have done that, change your Facebook password immediately. You may also want to change the password of the email is associated with your Facebook account.
  • Login: Here is where you can change your password. It’s wise to change your password every so often, whether someone has hacked into your account or not.
  • Setting up extra security: Get alerts about unrecognized logins. Facebook notifies you whenever someone tries to access your account from an unfamiliar device or location. Use two-factor authentication when logging into your Facebook account. Doing this requires you to use your Facebook password AND a login code. The code is sent through a text message or authentication app. Most people find this a hassle, yet I believe it is worth doing because of the added layer of security it provides.
