If you are a mom, you might be participating in the 10-day mom challenge on Facebook, as I am. A friend of mine from church recently nominated me for the challenge, which was certainly an honor. Yet, immediately the project felt a bit daunting. Before I continue with my experience, let me explain how this challenge works.

If you are nominated for the 10-day mom challenge, you being asked to post 10 different photos over 10 consecutive days – one photo each day. The photos you choose need to relate to you as a mom. It could be of you with your kid(s) or just your kid(s) on their own. Also, each time you post a photo, you nominate a different mom to take the challenge. So, you pick 10 moms over 10 days.

Why the Challenge Felt Daunting

To be honest, I had mixed feelings when my friend nominated me. For one thing, I have two daughters, so I wanted to be fair in how I selected the photos of them. But even more complicated was how to pick the 10 moms I was to nominate. Believe it or not, I’ve got nearly 1,900 friends on Facebook. Many of them are women, and quite a few of those are moms.

Finally, I decided that the moms I selected had to have a connection with Wisconsin, where I grew up. They needed to either be from there or be related to someone from there.

It took me a couple days into the challenge to make this decision.  So, I went back to my post on day one of my mom challenge and announced these criteria to my Facebook friends.

Why the Challenge Has Been Rewarding

Both of my daughters have been very helpful in sending me possible photos to post. It’s been fascinating to see what they have selected – both from their childhood and the from the present.

Flipping through photo albums from the years the girls were young has brought back so many wonderful memories. Especially touching was seeing photos of loved ones who have passed on.

Rarely do we take the time to chronicle our lives through a series of 10 photos. In the end, this project helped me to reflect on the importance of family and the bonds that unite us.

Now, I am grateful to my friend for nominating me. I hope the women I select will find this project to be meaningful as well.

How About You?

If you were to select 10 representative photos of your life whether you are a parent or not, which photos would you pick? Would your selection change if only you were to see them as opposed to posting them to Facebook? If you’re a mom, what are your thoughts about the 10-day mom challenge?
