When you post on Twitter, does that post also show up on your Facebook profile?
Do your LinkedIn status reports appear as tweets on Twitter?
When you pin to one of your Pinterest boards or repin another person’s pin, does that activity show up on Facebook?
One of the beauties of social media is that you can tweak the settings of each site to determine whether or not to have this kind of sharing among the sites in which you engage.
Tying Pinterest Activity to Your Facebook Personal Profile
For me, I like it when my Facebook friends link their Pinterest activity with their Facebook personal profile. For one thing, it tells me about interests they have that I didn’t know they have.
Plus they find some pretty nifty items on Pinterest that I then end up repinning to my Pinterest boards.
A friend of mind told me she would rather not have her Pinterest activity show up on her Facebook profile. Now that I have started following her on Pinterest, I can see why. She loves fashion and often repins quite a few pins at a time in this category.
For her, she wants to keep that interest of hers separate from what her Facebook friends see happening in her life via her Facebook profile.
A State Legislator’s Use of Social Media Sites
Recently I was at a program where state legislators were sharing how they used social media. These folks get hundreds of emails a day. Can you imagine how long it takes them (and their staff) to get through those?
For them to use social media effectively, they need to keep things simple. That’s why one of the legislators who presented on this topic said that he likes having his tweets on Twitter appear on his Facebook personal profile. That way he doesn’t have to do that same posting twice.
Plus he likes to do his own personal posting, not rely on his staff do this. He likes the authenticity and transparency this provides.
He does maintain a separate Facebook business page for official announcements of his activities and updates on the bills he is involved with. That one is maintained by his staff.
What’s Best for You?
Each of us needs to think through our social media strategy, even if our social media use is strictly personal and not for business. We need to determine when it makes sense to link our activity on one site to another site.
There are pros and cons to this linking, depending on our needs and how we want to come across to those who track with us on social media.
