Did you realize that there might be sections of your LinkedIn public profile that aren’t appearing when people find you via an internet search?
One way to see how your profile appears to the public is to go to your LinkedIn profile and then click on the button that says View Profile As.
Notice that at the very top of your screen you will see the words: This is what your profile looks like to: The word Connections then displays on your screen, but if you click on the arrow to the right of Connections, you will see the option of Public. Click on that.
Now you will see your LinkedIn public profile just as it looks to someone doing an internet search of your name.
But, what if you notice that there are sections of your profile that aren’t displaying? Here is what you need to do:
How to be Sure All of Your LinkedIn Profile Displays in a Public Search
- Hover your cursor over the little photo of you at the top right of your LinkedIn screen, and you will see several drop-down options. Click on the word Manage in the box that says Privacy and Settings.
- You will need to have your LinkedIn password handy if you haven’t already saved it in the browser you use to access LinkedIn. Enter that password if you haven’t saved it.
- There will be three headings across the top of the page. Click on the one in the middle: Privacy.
- Then click the top hyperlink: Edit your public profile.
- On the right hand side of the screen you will see a section called: Customize Your Public Profile.
- All the sections you have populated in your profile will be listed with a box to the left of each section.
- Be sure that ALL the boxes have a check mark in them. If a box isn’t checked and you want people to see that section, be sure to click on the box.
- I have had more than one client whose photo, summary and/or other key information didn’t display. Until we checked out this feature of LinkedIn, they had no idea that these sections were not available for public view.
- There could be times where you don’t want to publicly display certain sections of your profile. Or you might choose to temporarily make your entire profile seen only by you while you make some major updates to it.
- In general, I strongly recommend that you make your complete LinkedIn profile available for the viewing public. There could be a potential client, referral partner or hiring authority looking you up right now. Wouldn’t you want that person to see all you have shared about yourself on LinkedIn?
