Have you considered being a guest on a podcast? First, you need to determine if the podcast world is a fit for you. Do your clients, referral partners or others interested in your services listen to podcasts? Do you have a message, background story or other information that fits the podcast format?

When I asked myself those questions, I found that being a podcast guest is a good fit for me.

I also discovered that I have a knack for the kind of extemporaneous speaking that works well in this environment. Also, being a podcast guest allows me to inspire others in my baby boomer generation to look into starting a business, as I did at age 61. In addition, these interviews provide me with a way to reach a wide audience with tips on using LinkedIn and other social media sites.

Landing More Podcast Guest Interviews

  • Create LinkedIn and Facebook posts letting folks know that you are looking to land interviews as a guest on podcasts. Be specific about the types of podcasts you want to be a guest on.
  • Join Facebook groups that have members looking for podcast guests and people wanting to be guests.
  • At your business networking groups, announce that you are seeking podcast guest opportunities.

Preparing for Podcast Guest Interviews

  • Learn about each podcast through listening to at least one episode. If possible, have a phone or Zoom call with the podcast host prior to your interview.
  • Create a list of questions on the topic(s) you will be interviewed about and send that to the host.
  • In addition, create a short bio to send to the host, along with a professional photo. Gear the bio to fit the nature of the topic(s) you will be interviewed about.
  • Practice answering the questions you submitted to the host. However, don’t memorize the answers or come across too scripted in your responses.

During the Podcast Interviews

  • Come into the podcast with a relaxed, positive attitude.
  • Answer the questions in a genuine, direct, and friendly manner.
  • Keep your answers relatively short to help enhance the conversational flow of the interview.
  • Do everything you can to support the podcast host and focus on making a positive difference for their audience.

After the Podcast Interviews

  • Send a thank you note via email or US mail to the podcast host.
  • Repost the link to the podcast on the social media sites the host uses to promote the podcast.
  • Another approach is to share the host’s social media posts about the podcast interview to your followers.
  • Either way, be sure to tag the podcast host wherever you are posting.
  • Include graphics that the podcast host created for your interview, if provided.
