I truly believe that having generosity of spirit is good for you and your business. A variation of this concept is called “giving away your best stuff.”

On the face of it, having generosity of spirit and giving away your best stuff may not make sense. Yet, sharing valuable information and ideas for free pays off in the end.

Many of us have been reflecting on how we can be of service to others during the COVID-19 era. As much as we would want it to be otherwise, this virus continues to remain part of our lives.

We can each give of ourselves in countless ways, and it’s important to find the ways that fit you. I decided to give back by providing free Linked training and profile critique sessions.

How I Got Started Giving Away My Best Stuff

In April 2020, a leader of a national membership organization asked me to do a virtual LinkedIn training for their members. Many of these individuals worked in the casino industry and had lost their jobs or been furloughed.

I provided a two-part LinkedIn virtual training geared toward helping them land a job. At the end of the second session, I offered the attendees a free 30-minute one-to-one LinkedIn session.

Many attendees took me up on my offer and expressed their deep gratitude for my help. During those sessions, conducted over Zoom, I reviewed their profiles and offered suggestions for improvement.

Then I realized that there must be other organizations and groups whose members could benefit from a similar presentation. Plus, some of these members would benefit from my advice on their LinkedIn profiles.

By the end of 2020, I had given over 40 free presentations. In addition, I had helped over 80 people individually for free with their LinkedIn profiles.

Soliciting Opportunities to Give Away My Best Stuff

My first step was to decide who my target audience was for these free LinkedIn trainings and follow-up sessions. In addition to membership organizations, I chose to offer my trainings to job seeker groups and to nonprofits.

The next step was to spread the word about my desire to help. I posted on Facebook and LinkedIn about my offer of free LinkedIn training and profile critique sessions. Then, I emailed about 25 of my closest business associates and asked them to share my social media posts.

Almost all of them were kind enough to do that. Others did email introductions with people from the organizations and groups I was targeting.

It’s such a blessing to be able to give away my best stuff. And this is especially true in a time when so many people need help. I hope you agree with me that having generosity of spirit is good for you and for your business.

FYI – I originally published this blog post in late June of 2020 and made a few updates to it. I decided to republish this post , as I’ve been reflecting on the ways that I and others can continue to serve others as we show our generosity of spirit.

In 2021, I’ve continued to provide these free LinkedIn trainings to organizations and groups. If you know anyone involved in a membership or nonprofit organization or a job seeker group who could benefit from my free trainings, please spread the word.
