Be honest with me – do you own your awesome on LinkedIn?
Your first response might be – who me, awesome? And the second one might be – I’m just not sure I’m comfortable being awesome on LinkedIn.
Recently, I devoured Miranda VonFricken’s incredible book “Own Your Awesome on LinkedIn,” and it was a life-changing experience. I am taking her advice to heart and truly owning my awesome on LinkedIn!
I’ve read several excellent books on LinkedIn since I launched my business in 2010. For the most part, they were “how to do” books. Miranda’s approach is a “how to be” book. She stresses that we start by examining our values, our calling, and the positive impact we want to make. Once we take those steps, we can begin our journey of being awesome on LinkedIn.
Along with being a best-selling author, Miranda is a LinkedIn and personal brand trainer, speaker, podcast host, and much more. We met earlier this month when my website designer Shannon Gross told me about her. Even though Miranda and I had a relatively short visit, we I truly bonded with each other.
Here’s some excerpts from the many sections from her book that spoke to me.
Energize Your LinkedIn
In this chapter of her book, Miranda gives us room on the pages to respond to such important questions as:
- Why LinkedIn? Why are you really here?
- How can LinkedIn help you achieve your goals – the really BIG ONES?
- Who do you NEED to connect with?
- What would make this a MASSIVELY successful platform for you?
- What IMPACT do you intend to make while here?
- What do you NEED people to know about you when they visit your LinkedIn profile?
These thought-provoking questions really got my juices flowing as I went deep within myself to create my responses.
Another part of this chapter that resonated with me was the section about listing our LinkedIn Core Values. She points out: “Naming a few values will build a strong foundation along your journey to growth on the platform.”
Your Personal Brand on LinkedIn
In this chapter, Miranda has a section for several different kinds of users of LinkedIn, such as:
- Students
- Employees
- Employers, hiring managers, and C-suite executives
- Entrepreneurs
With each set of users, she asks very thought-provoking questions. Examples from the entrepreneur section include:
- What are my core values?
- What sets me apart from others in my industry?
- What do I want to be known for?
- What positive impact do I want to make?
- What is my expertise and how can I showcase it?
It’s been a while since I took the time to answer questions like these. My responses were both validating and surprising at times.
For example, here’s my response to her question of “What positive impact do you want to make on the world?”
“Business owners, especially women in their 60s and 70s, feel more confident as they use LinkedIn to attract more clients and to develop and nurture their business and personal relationships.”

Heather Monahan is a global keynote speaker, a best-selling author, and host of Creating Confidence. Here’s what she had to say about Miranda’s book:
“Own Your Awesome is more than a “How To” for LinkedIn, it’s a “How to BE” for anyone who’s felt held back, insecure about sharing their story or unsure of how to level up in a space that can seem overcrowded and unwelcoming. This book is a rallying cry for individuals to embrace their unique strengths, celebrate their achievements, and confidently present their authentic selves to the professional world.”
