Use Lists to Simplify Social Media

Are you on Facebook or Twitter? Ever feel overwhelmed with the amount of commentary that follows through your newsfeed on these social media sites? One system that has helped me is that of creating lists. Facebook automatically sets up certain lists for you, such as Family or Close Friends. You can also create specialized lists on Facebook. Then you can group your Facebook friends into one or more lists. So, if you are especially interested in the postings of your friends from work, church, or an organization you are in, you can just click on those lists. To create a [...]

Social Media Energizes Me

What draws you to use social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, or whatever other sites you frequent? That’s a question that I have pondered many times, especially as a social media tutor with a focus on the Baby Boomers generation. I don’t profess to be a social media expert. What I prefer to call myself is a social media enthusiast. How would you describe your relationship with social media? There are countless reasons why people use social media. Yet, I suspect that there is a common thread about social media users – they are energized by their time [...]

Use Social Media After Networking Events

One of the best things about social media is that you can keep in touch with people after you meet them at a networking event. In the not so long ago days, once you attended a networking event, you took the business cards you collected, put them in a rolodex or some kind of binder, and probably didn’t keep the names and faces together. Those days are long gone. However, what I have found is that it takes discipline to take advantage of social media sites, such as LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook, after a face to face networking event. For example, [...]

Use Social Media to Enhance your Experiences of Events

Have you ever felt a bit nervous about attending a retreat, workshop, convention or other gathering where you know few, if any, of the participants? Before social media, all we could do was show up at the event and do our best to feel comfortable with these strangers. Now we have all kinds of alternatives. One person who follows my Boomers’ Social Media Tutor Facebook page recently wrote about how she used the friending feature of Facebook to help her get to know fellow participants of an upcoming writers retreat. Luckily for her, the organization sponsoring the retreat had set up the [...]

Updating Your Social Media Profiles

How often do you update your social media profiles? Granted, I am not active on ALL the available social media sites, but I am active on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Pinterest. The site that has the most robust profile options is certainly LinkedIn.  You can find me there at:  www.linkedin.com/in/joycefeustel/ Having just gone through my LinkedIn profile with a fine-toothed comb, I found a few things that needed changing. Plus I had some additions to make. For example, I never added the name of my social media certificate – Online Marketing and Social Media Certification Level 1 – that I [...]

Tweeting and Pinning: Pacing Yourself on Twitter and Pinterest

Just over 4 months ago, I decided to get active on Twitter. Even though I had created a Twitter account back in 2009, I didn’t see much point in getting active on Twitter until I had a website for my business. Plus I wanted to get my business blog established before joining the Twitter crowd. Even though I can more or less find my way around Twitter, I still just dip into the Twitter stream in little dibs and dabs. On a typical day, I will check into Twitter about 2-3 times a day and tweet about 6-8 times in total for [...]

Speaking About Social Media

This past Saturday I had a terrific time speaking on social media with members of the Women’s Resources Group of the Colorado State Grange. It turns out this group was more savvy about social media than I had expected, and that made for a very lively and interactive experience. Here are some key points that I took away from this experience: Even if the program organizer tells you the audience is relatively inexperienced with social media, be wary of planning a talk that is too simplistic. Get to the gathering at least 30 minutes prior to the start time to [...]

Endorsing Others on LinkedIn

Just recently LinkedIn, the professionally oriented social media website, launched a new feature. It provides LinkedIn users the opportunity to endorse their LinkedIn connections for skills that the connection has listed on their profile. You might have gotten an email recently that a LinkedIn connected endorsed you for a specific skill that you listed on your profile and wondered what was going on. Has that happened to you? Heck, maybe you forgot you even had an account on LinkedIn. For me, this new feature kind of took me by surprise. So, I was glad that others had already created some blog [...]

Liking and Engaging With Facebook Pages

Think about the Facebook Pages you have “liked.” Why did you decide to click on the “like” button? Recently I found an interesting article on this topic when I searching on Twitter using the phrase “baby boomers and Facebook.” In this article “Why Boomers, Millennials Like Facebook Pages,” author David Cohen referenced a recent study conducted by GutCheck. According the company’s report released on September 10, 2012: 52 percent of boomers will like brands in exchange for offers, compared with 42 percent of millennials. Both groups had trouble remembering all of the brands they had liked — 63 percent of [...]

Respecting Each Other’s Point of View – On Facebook and in General

With the Republican National Convention wrapping up tonight and the Democratic National Convention around the corner, it seems that everywhere we turn, we are inundated with people espousing their political point of view. As someone who has participated in the world of politics, both as someone who has held local elected office and as an observer of the political world, I do my best to respect all points of view. Sometimes that can be hard to do, especially when you feel passionately about an issue. I know I struggle to know how to frame my thoughts, whether in a conversation [...]
