Use Facebook to Honor Your Favorite Local Organizations

How can you use Facebook to honor local organizations such as chambers of commerce, professional/trade organizations, broad-based business networking groups, category-specific leads/referral groups? Last week, in just one day, I attended: the monthly meeting of my professional organization my favorite broad-based networking group a signature event hosted by one of the chambers of commerce I belong to. Because each of these organizations is so important to me, I often spread the word about them through Facebook. I don’t do this every time I attend a meeting, but each of these gatherings felt special enough to me to call attention to [...]

Use Facebook Live Videos Effectively at Events

Have you been wondering how to use Facebook Live videos effectively at events? Creating these videos can be fun, once you get the hang of it. They are a straightforward way of drawing attention to your event. And they’re free. You create them through the Facebook app on your smart phone. Begin as though you were going to create a post, but click on the word “Live” below the box where you would type. Type in a brief description of what you are about to record, then click on the arrows at the top right to record someone else. To [...]

How to Handle Awkward Situations on Social Media

Have you ever been in an awkward situation on a social media site? Perhaps you were the one posted something you later felt awkward about. Or perhaps someone else did something that seemed awkward to you. However, you didn’t know how to let them know so they hopefully wouldn’t make the same mistake again. With Mother’s Day fresh in our minds, I got to thinking about this topic. Often our mothers (or others in their generation) want to communicate with us on a social site. Yet, not having grown up using social media, they can be prone to doing things [...]

Monitor Visitor Posts, Comments, and Reviews on Your Facebook Business Page

Do you already monitor visitor posts, comments, and reviews on your Facebook Business Page? This is the type of activity that increases your page’s traction and visibility. That’s why it is so important to track and showcase it. However, everyone occasionally receives a comment, post, and/or review that is less than complimentary. Or one that simply makes no sense, or is even written in another language. (The latter has happened on my page.) What do you do then?   Visitor Posts and Comments on Your Facebook Business Page Adjust the general settings for your page. This allows you can monitor [...]

Be Sure to Control Your Facebook Business Page

Do you have a Facebook business page to help market your business? If so, did you create it yourself? If not, are you one of its administrators? If someone created it for you, that person automatically became the administrator, usually called the admin. There can be more than one, so make sure they made you an admin rather than just an editor. You need to be able to monitor the activity of any others who work on the page. This is true even if you have a trusted employee or social media professional doing this for you. That’s why you [...]

Social Media for Sensitive Situations

Have you used social media for sensitive situations? I have. Facebook is my site of choice for these situations because that’s where most of my friends are. Recently a loved one faced some significant health issues and having Facebook as a communication tool was a blessing. It gave us a way to reach many friends and acquaintances with the initial news. I also posted when there were periodic updates about progress and setbacks.   Recommendations for Using Social Media for Sensitive Situations Call and/or email close family members and friends before putting anything on social media. You don’t want one [...]

Facebook Makes Format Changes

Every now and then Facebook makes format changes. If you access Facebook via computer, you may have noticed some changes. If you’re one of the many who use it almost exclusively on their mobile devices, things probably haven’t changed. At least not that much. The computer-access format changes can be frustrating when you first see them. The first thing I noticed is that the left side of the Home page just looks different. Three parts are the same:  your name and the little photo of you, plus your Newsfeed. But everything else is different. After I got used to those [...]

Commending Others via Facebook and LinkedIn

During this annual season of giving,  consider commending others via Facebook and LinkedIn. Such commendations honor those people and companies that have served you well during the past year.   Here are some tips for how to do it:   Commending Others on Facebook Review people or companies on their business page just as you might post reviews on Yelp or Google. Start by searching for the person or company’s business page. You will find the Reviews option on the left side of the page. Some business pages will not have it available, but hopefully most will. Click on the word Reviews and select [...]

Facebook Posts: Selecting Your Audience

Facebook users can select their audiences for Facebook posts on their personal page. Have you tried changing your audiences? You do it in the section to the left of the blue Post button in the status update box. It’s important that you keep in mind that whatever audience you select will become the default for your next post. So you must be vigilant about remembering to check that you’ve got the right audience for your current post. For example, let’s say you have a post that’s more personal in nature. It’s one you’d prefer to not have your business acquaintances who are also Facebook friends see. [...]

Challenges of Having Two Facebook Accounts

Many people choose to have two Facebook accounts: one for their personal life and one for their business life. In addition, some will use this business-oriented account to replace having an actual business page. I understand the desire to keep personal and business lives separate on Facebook. However, there are challenges with having two Facebook accounts. And for the most part, these challenges overshadow any perceived benefits. First, it is against Facebook’s terms of service to create an account solely for business purposes. Therefore, Facebook has the right to shut down these accounts, and I am familiar with two instances [...]
