Facebook Profile Changes

Do you have the new format for your Facebook personal profile? I just got mine a couple days ago, and for the most part, I like it. Here is what it looks like: https://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=tn_tnmn#!/joyce.feustel What I especially like is the larger size of the photos and having just one column for my postings. The overall look feels cleaner and simpler to me. What I find intriguing is that all the items that were at the top of my personal profile before are on the left hand side of the profile and are more prominent. These items include: Basic information in [...]

Keeping Up with Social Media Changes

Ever get the feeling that as soon as you get the hang of how a social media site is laid out that the format changed on you? Facebook is probably the biggest “culprit” in this department. Sometimes it feels like a full time job to keep up with their changes. Just tonight on Pinterest, I found this a pin to this helpful blog post: http://normadoiron.net/facebook-update-increases-audience-engagement/ Thank you, Norma Doiron, for letting us know that visuals will matter more in the new look of Facebook, as will the “likes” of a Facebook page. Quality content was always important, yet it will be [...]

Leaving a Job? Use LinkedIn to Stay in Touch

Ever leave a job and miss the connections you formed with your co-workers, clients, vendors, and everyone else? If you were especially close to any of those people, you probably were already friends with them on Facebook. Maybe you don’t really want to know about their personal business, but you would like to stay in touch professionally. You never know when that person could help you in some way. Or maybe you will be the one to help them. Rather than just rely on email or phone contact, consider connecting with them via LinkedIn. If you don’t already have an [...]

9 Tips for Effectively Leveraging LinkedIn

Are you on LinkedIn? Formed in 2003, LinkedIn is a social media site that seeks to help the world’s professionals be more successful. People use LinkedIn to help promote their brand, increase their company’s profitability, to expand their network, to land a job, and simply to engage with other professionals worldwide. Although not as well known as Facebook or Twitter, LinkedIn recently surpassed the 200 million mark. Some users complain that it has become too busy and complicated. Personally, I like the changes made by LinkedIn over the last six months. To effectively leverage LinkedIn, you need to have a [...]

Use Lists to Simplify Social Media

Are you on Facebook or Twitter? Ever feel overwhelmed with the amount of commentary that follows through your newsfeed on these social media sites? One system that has helped me is that of creating lists. Facebook automatically sets up certain lists for you, such as Family or Close Friends. You can also create specialized lists on Facebook. Then you can group your Facebook friends into one or more lists. So, if you are especially interested in the postings of your friends from work, church, or an organization you are in, you can just click on those lists. To create a [...]

Social Media Energizes Me

What draws you to use social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, or whatever other sites you frequent? That’s a question that I have pondered many times, especially as a social media tutor with a focus on the Baby Boomers generation. I don’t profess to be a social media expert. What I prefer to call myself is a social media enthusiast. How would you describe your relationship with social media? There are countless reasons why people use social media. Yet, I suspect that there is a common thread about social media users – they are energized by their time [...]

Use Social Media After Networking Events

One of the best things about social media is that you can keep in touch with people after you meet them at a networking event. In the not so long ago days, once you attended a networking event, you took the business cards you collected, put them in a rolodex or some kind of binder, and probably didn’t keep the names and faces together. Those days are long gone. However, what I have found is that it takes discipline to take advantage of social media sites, such as LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook, after a face to face networking event. For example, [...]
