Segmenting Social Media Contacts

Ever feel overwhelmed by all the updates from your Facebook friends and posts by people you follow on Twitter? Have you ever considered segmenting these folks into different lists for easier sorting? Each of these sites has a system that allows you to segment your connections and filter your news feeds so you see posts by subject or any other segmentation that works for you  Create Lists on Facebook: Only You Will Know Just go to the Friends section on your Home Page and hover your cursor over the word “more.” This will reveal the lists Facebook has created for [...]

Relationships and Social Media

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, many of us are thinking about our relationships, especially the ones with our spouse, partner, or significant other. But for me, Valentine’s Day makes me think about ALL my relationships, not just the more intimate ones.   So, in honor of Valentine’s Day, here are some tips for sharing posts on Facebook with the different “audiences” in your life and for staying abreast of their posts. Tracking the Facebook Posts of Your Close Friends Assign your closest friends in real life to the Close Friends category on Facebook. Doing this will place a [...]

Use Social Media to Help Promote Your Book (Or Even a Chapter)

Have you written a book? Have you written a chapter in an anthology? Or do you write articles or blog posts (like this one)? Any time you write something – from a short blog post to a book – remember to use social media to help draw more readers to what you have written. Recently, I had a chapter published in the book Seek Your Peak to Find Your Spark, an anthology compiled by April M. Williams. The book has accounts from multiple authors about what they are passionate about and how they came to develop that passion. Here is [...]

Facebook Keeps Changing – What Else is New?

In just the last week or so I have noticed a couple of things that have recently changed about Facebook. The first one you might not have noticed unless you happened to be checking your privacy settings. The other one is pretty obvious.   Privacy Settings Are Now Found Under “Settings” A few days ago, I wanted to check something in my privacy settings. But when I went to the drop down menu under the cog wheel icon on my menu bar, the word “privacy” wasn’t where it always had been. So, I went to Facebook’s Help Center and typed [...]

Learn From Your Competition on Social Media

Recently a financial planner asked me to give him some feedback on his LinkedIn profile. As you may know, professionals in this highly-regulated industry have many restrictions on how they use social media in general, including what they can put in a LinkedIn profile. That said, I took a look at his profile and made a few general suggestions for improvement. Then I reviewed the LinkedIn profiles of a few of the other financial planners I am connected with on LinkedIn. I shared the LinkedIn URLs for these planners with the fellow who asked me to review his profile. Then [...]

Networking at Social Media Classes

When you take a social media class or any other business-related class, do you come prepared to network? Having both taken and taught a wide range of social media classes, I am struck by the incredible networking opportunities these classes offer. However, in order to make this type of networking work you for you, you need to do some preparation prior to arriving at class, you need to reach out to your classmates, and you need to follow up afterwards. Preparations Prior to the Class Be sure to have your business cards with you. Think about what kinds of people [...]

Social Media Users – Search Yourself on the Internet

When was the last time you did an Internet search of your own name? The more social media sites you use, the more likely it is that a link to your presence on that site will appear when people search your name. Now, some people (like me) are happy that people find them and their social sites on the Internet. That's because they like the additional marketing opportunity. But others prefer that their social media activity not be readily available to strangers. Search Results for Joyce Feustel: Someone Who Wants to be Found When I type Joyce Feustel into a Google search [...]

Advocacy and Social Media

Recently I facilitated a brainstorming session for an advocacy group that was sorting out their social media strategies and options – and I am still thinking about the special considerations and challenges groups like this face regarding their use of social media. Often there is a disparate range of social media experience among the members, so it can be difficult to find appropriate language with which to adequately discuss the matters they need to address. Also, leadership in advocacy groups can be somewhat fluid, with members coming and going, not always in predictable ways. As a result of spending time [...]

Protecting Your Privacy on Facebook

Have you ever reviewed the privacy settings on your Facebook account? In general, the default settings on any Facebook account are quite open, meaning that everything you post is visible to anyone who might find your account. Depending on your personal and business circumstances, you may want to make your Facebook account settings more restrictive than the default settings. How do you do that? It’s pretty simple.   To Adjust Your Privacy Settings: Click on the little cog wheel on the far right end of the blue menu bar at the top of your Facebook screen. Several options will be [...]

Trading Constructive Criticism – Definitely Worth the Time

When was the last time you asked a colleague to critique one or more of your social media sites? I advise you to periodically have someone with a decent understanding of how social media works in business spend some time with your LinkedIn profile, your Facebook business page, or your Twitter bio and offer you honest constructive criticism. You might be surprised what they pick up on. I am not necessarily suggesting that you pay this person – trade your time for theirs, by which I mean that you will do the same for one or more of their sites. [...]
