Make the Most of LinkedIn as a Job Search Tool

LinkedIn can provide powerful tools to job seekers, but only if they take advantage of them strategically. In the past couple of weeks I have provided LinkedIn training for two groups of job seekers, and have also tutored some job seekers in private sessions, making me more aware than ever of the things people often miss when using this powerful site. Here are some hints for making the most of your time and LinkedIn’s abilities: LinkedIn Tools for Job Seekers to Land Their Next Position Make your profile work for you in key word searches. From the headline through the [...]

Make the Most of Meetup

With over 20 million members make up nearly 200,000 Meetup groups in nearly 200 countries, chances are you’re a member. But are you making the most of your membership? Wikipedia describes Meetup as: “An online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. Meetup allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest, such as politics, books, games, movies, health, pets, careers or hobbies. Users enter their postal code or their city and the topic they want to meet about, and the website helps them arrange a place and time to [...]

Avoid Sending Mass Invites to Connect on Social Media

One of my pet peeves is how easy it is to inadvertently send out mass requests to connect on some social media sites. Unfortunately, these invites don’t seem to be likely to stop arriving any time soon. Even people experienced on social media sites occasionally fall into the “trap” of clicking on something that auto-broadcasts invitations. The Issue: Actually there are two issues with sending these invite: doing so can come across as unprofessional and it can connect you to people you might not have chosen to connect with on that particular platform. Countless people have told me how sites [...]

Ask for Recommendations and Endorsements on LinkedIn

Potential employers, clients, and referral partners pay attention to the kinds of skills you are endorsed for. They also review the recommendations you have received. Yet many people remain reluctant to ask for public recognition for the work they do. Skill-based endorsements and recommendations are vital ways to make your profile stand out and encourage people to contact you rather than someone else in your business. Endorsements for Skills There are a few things to do, however, before you start requesting endorsements from your contacts: Begin by reviewing the skills currently listed in your profile to be sure that they [...]

Professional Gallery Adds Visual Dimension to LinkedIn Profiles

Are you using the professional gallery option on your LinkedIn profile? This oft ignored feature allows you to incorporate visuals and showcase yourself more effectively. And it’s very easy to add “media” items. When you are in edit mode, go into the summary section and you will see a small rectangle in the top right-hand corner. Click on that, and you will see the option to add a link or upload a file. Click on the appropriate link and follow the upload prompts. The types of things you can upload into your professional gallery are listed in your experience and [...]

Let Projects Section Help you Stand Out on LinkedIn

You can use the Projects section to make your LinkedIn profile stand out. Most of us have been involved in some kind of project-based work, whether as part of our paid work or as part of our volunteer lives. One of the reasons I like this section so much is that if your project has a URL, you can add that URL in the Project URL field. When you include a URL (such as to a website you created or worked on or a link to something on your own site), the viewer gets taken directly to what you want [...]

Showcase Yourself in Your LinkedIn Summary

There are a variety of ways to approach the LinkedIn Summary section. Some people prefer a short summation of their business experience. Others create more of a personal vision statement and talk about the direction in which they are heading. Whatever you decide, make sure to effectively showcase yourself and your talents.   Tips for Maximizing Your Summary Section Write in the first-person for a more personal feel. If you prefer something more formal, use the formal third person. Either way, review the summary sections of a cross-section of people in your industry to see what trends and patterns you [...]

Processing Feedback On Your Social Marketing Activities

Responding to feedback, whether solicited or not, can be challenging. As I mentioned in my earlier post: “Seeking Feedback for Your Social Marketing Activities,” our egos can get in the way of receiving constructive critique and making the appropriate changes. Recently I wrote to a number of business colleagues and personal friends asking for feedback on a series of videos I had recently created on ways to optimize a LinkedIn profile. The comments have been both specific and helpful, and I will apply many of them in my next round of creating videos. Here are my recommendations for making the [...]

Seek Feedback for Your Social Marketing Activities

Do you solicit feedback from your clients and others regarding your social marketing activities? And if you do, do you make changes based on that feedback? I highly recommend doing both of these things on a regular basis. Customer feedback was one of the topics addressed at a recent panel discussion at Social Marketing for Business, a Denver-area group that meets bi-monthly “to focus on different social marketing techniques, tools and strategies to help businesses better understand and maximize return on investment of social marketing programs.” My favorite comment by a panelist was “When you ask your customers for feedback, [...]
