Celebrate Your Business Milestones on Social Media

It’s important to celebrate your own business milestones on social media. Too often people avoid this because they don’t want to come across as boastful or overly self-promoting. While you shouldn’t post one brag after another, what I have found is that selectively sharing special milestones gives folks a chance to thank and honor you.   Some Business Milestones to Celebrate Anniversary of the Creation of Your Business. Recently, I celebrated the fourth anniversary of my company with posts on Facebook and LinkedIn. The responses were so heartwarming. Technically, Boomers Social Media Tutors began in October, 2010, when I created [...]

Be Sure to Control Your Facebook Business Page

Do you have a Facebook business page to help market your business? If so, did you create it yourself? If not, are you one of its administrators? If someone created it for you, that person automatically became the administrator, usually called the admin. There can be more than one, so make sure they made you an admin rather than just an editor. You need to be able to monitor the activity of any others who work on the page. This is true even if you have a trusted employee or social media professional doing this for you. That’s why you [...]

Tips for Adjusting to LinkedIn’s Changes

Many people have started asking me for tips for adjusting to LinkedIn's changes. Do you have LinkedIn’s new user interface on your computer yet? If not, you should have it by the end of March. The occasional LinkedIn user might not even notice when the look of their LinkedIn changes on their computer. The more frequent LinkedIn user might be thrown off by these changes. They might start wondering how to update their profile and/or how to navigate effectively.   Profile Layout   The new look of LinkedIn is much like the way that LinkedIn displays on a mobile device [...]

Social Media for Sensitive Situations

Have you used social media for sensitive situations? I have. Facebook is my site of choice for these situations because that’s where most of my friends are. Recently a loved one faced some significant health issues and having Facebook as a communication tool was a blessing. It gave us a way to reach many friends and acquaintances with the initial news. I also posted when there were periodic updates about progress and setbacks.   Recommendations for Using Social Media for Sensitive Situations Call and/or email close family members and friends before putting anything on social media. You don’t want one [...]

Getting Sales Navigator on LinkedIn

Until now, I have never considered getting Sales Navigator on LinkedIn, but I have changed my mind. Here’s why. This year I am expanding the business offerings of my company. I will continue to help small business owners and entrepreneurs be more productive with LinkedIn and other social media platforms. My new offering is providing LinkedIn training for teams of sales professionals. Many sales professionals can benefit from LinkedIn features not available to those with a free account. If I am to help them use those features, I will need to get them myself. If you’re considering moving to a [...]

How Much Time Should I Spend to be Effective on Social Media?

Many people wonder how to spend their time on social media when using it for business purposes. Many people in the classes I teach and those whom I tutor privately ask me this question. My answer is: Less time than you may think. When answering this question, I make a distinction between time spent for business vs. time spent for personal reasons. How much time to spend online for personal reasons will vary a lot from person to person. Some people like to hang out a lot on social media, just like some people like to watch a lot of [...]

Determining Which Business Networking Groups Are Best for You

Finding the business networking groups that fit you best can be a big challenge. In the Denver area where I live, there are hundreds of groups to choose from. The same is likely true where you live. So, it can be difficult even for someone well-versed in networking to determine the best fit. And someone brand-new to the business networking scene can find it quite overwhelming. One of the best groups I’ve found is a Meetup called #5280Inspired Meetup: Connect and Build a Strong Network. It was founded in early 2015 by Alyce Blum, a networking coach and consultant, to [...]

Facebook Makes Format Changes

Every now and then Facebook makes format changes. If you access Facebook via computer, you may have noticed some changes. If you’re one of the many who use it almost exclusively on their mobile devices, things probably haven’t changed. At least not that much. The computer-access format changes can be frustrating when you first see them. The first thing I noticed is that the left side of the Home page just looks different. Three parts are the same:  your name and the little photo of you, plus your Newsfeed. But everything else is different. After I got used to those [...]
